They had done that lighter more melodic prog rock sound so well on SoNGS and LFatTM. This kinda sounds like an attempt at that again, especially SoNGS, mixed with a noticeable Rush influence.

Yeah, The Place Where I Belong grows on you. Transitions are definitely not one of their strengths on this album, which doesn't help to elude the impression this feels more like a transition album for them. Can absolutely see the Rush comparison. Maybe some of these would hit better, if they managed to dial in a dirtier rock sound instead of going for the classical rock canvas. I'm down with the eastern-european ska influence in Self-Aware, though I feel like this does leave much to be desired as a whole.

In all honesty, as to what you guys refer to as "awkward", I'd straight up claim they turned a lil boomer-y. Like, the non-fun part of being a boomer lol

Friend or Foe and the two instrumental tracks are my favorites here.
Otherwise, solid Riverside as usual. Not on the level of most previous releases though. The vocals are pretty good, but yeah, lyrics are about as subtle as a sledgehammer.

Their music is both sterile and catchy, it's kind of a mixed bag for me

Checked one track, was intrigued yet bored

Mariusz stated some details on the album on FB and explained that the (imo horrible) lyrics are written this way on purpose.
''The lyrics on the new album are straightforward, stripped of metaphors and poetic language. Some sound almost like clippings from articles about social changes. It has been done to underline the fact that this is the kind of world we live in - the world stripped of metaphors, full of direct language: "truth", "lie", "subscribe", "unsubscribe", "accept", "follow", "update", "upload" etc.
The lyrics about pop-philosophers who teach us how to live and what to do in "The Place Where I Belong" was supposed to evoke a smile and perhaps... mild embarrassment. Just like it's both funny and embarrassing to read quotes by some of the contemporary pseudo-philosophers or to listen to "patho-influencers".

''In all seriousness, though, album is amazing, and of course the lyrics are a bit off at times, but most of them are jokingly delivered. Riverside are looking on the outside more than ever before, and they don't take themselves seriously.''
^After some listens and what I feel from the music videos from this album, I think this is clearly what they were trying to promote here. I just feel like it is badly delivered on this album since from what I see in this thread, everything here feels like a step down in quality, instead of trying to ''underline the fact that this is the kind of world we live in'' as Marius said.

They can explain it all they want and say the lyrics are self-aware or whatever, but that doesn't make the end result any better to listen to. Reminds me of when Arcade Fire tried to convince the press and fans that Everything Now was a bad album on purpose.
I actually refrained from calling these lyrics terrible or cringy because I wanted to give some leeway since English isn't their first language. I think they're fully aware of what they did though, and seem to have succeeded in getting their vision across, so good for them I guess.

God knows what happened to his voice in this one. Awkward timing and intonation, stumbling through terrible lyrics trying to cram them into stanzas that just don't want that many words, I am gutted at how much this album makes feel so disappointed. Listening to LFatTM again - there is so much emotion in his voice. Musically, I have very little if anything critical to say - an instrumental version of the album would be nice.

I think I need to stop listening to this album - everytime I give it a spin, I have the urge to add another comment. And I don't like being bitter about bands I love, so probably best to just move on from this one and get over myself

I'm genuinely bummed that this fell off everyone's radars so fast. This is easily the best Riverside material in a long time. Everything is so catchy and the grooves are awesome. You all scared me before my first listen with the "robot voice" comments but it's not nearly as bad as it was made out to be. In fact, it ties in with some voicework in Landmine Blast on the pre-choruses.
I think the irregular cadence/campy lyrics in Place Where I Belong really fit with the sarcastic feel of that part of the song. I actually really enjoy them after well over a dozen spins. The one place where Duda's cadence misses the mark is in the last song when he spouts "Unsubscribe to the ones who make us hostile." That... That's not great.
Overall though, this record is a banger. And I really don't think it deserved the 2.7 review as its default.
