There's a duet with Soen's singer though, and it's pretty good.

This is an excellent review. Probably one of the better ones I've read recently. Also, this is the first Katatonia album I've really like since Night is a New Day. The new Riverside and Katatonia are sitting neck-and-neck as my number one and number two albums (still can't decide which order) in this short 20 days so far.

Sounds too commercial and glossy, I like their early albums though.

Yeah, bulk of this is square-on mall doom (though I did like how Opaline interpreted that brief for max cheese max catchiness)
I swear half my gripes with this band would be a whole lot easier to get over if they stopped randomly generating gothic tumblr lyrics and shoehorning the same metrical template into them for practically ever verse, sans any vocal inflections. Not really any excuse for this kind of writing so far into a career
Lovely rev though, v here for that dark room

Solid on the first listen. Nothing particularly stood out though, bar the bonus track which was great. Will need a little time to sink in I reckon.

The lyrics fell in quality after TGCD (exceptions apply obviously).
On first listen, the album is okay, but no step up from City Burials. Still, the once so present angst is lacking.

City Burials was somehow my first Katatonia. It reminded me of Opeth in spots and I really enjoyed it. I'm going to listen to this either way, but is this album similar?

I'd say yes Sow, although I feel it's heavier and more in line with their older albums. I think you'll like it.

I don't see the Opeth comparison but go for it, it's right up your alley.

Ah their lyrics have always been terrible
They used to be charmingly abysmal though tbf
‘He went to far the fucker, it’s not like I owed him money’

yeah their lyrics have got better with the years, probably too much, cause right now I have no idea what they mean haha

---I don't see the Opeth comparison but go for it, it's right up your alley.---
It might have just been specific vocal and atmospheric choices within certain songs, but I'm also pulling from 3 year old memories so maybe I'm way off. I listened to the first four songs on my way to work off this album and none of them reminded me of Opeth for whatever that's worth. They were still good.

LOVE Fall of Hearts, so I'm hoping for more of that.
