Hard for me to express what I don’t enjoy about this album; there are a lot of hooks for a He Is Legend record but not many of them are particularly interesting and at worst some are downright grating. It’s maybe overproduced and appealing to a certain demographic of hard rock fan, which I’m not a part of I suppose. If they’ve progressed as a band, it’s away from me.
This is more interesting than Heavy Fruit at least. It’s bottom three in their catalog.

"I only find it more grating in their later stuff. It's a problem I have more with other metalcore bands"
now that i think about it, i agree. early HIL choruses were fine for me.

I think the decision, whether intentional or not, to streamline their songwriting might be creating some of this recent chorus fatigue.

Album is so fucking good. This guitarist is crazy underrated. Writes some of the coolest riffs

completely agree on this one sounding a bit samey and giving ear fatigue
listening to individual tracks and not the full album start to finish helps me appreciate them more
However at the end of the day I don't think this will compare to Poison and Hates You.
I'll probably rate it alongside Few and White Bat, albeit being a different type of cat so depending on the mood I'm in

Or just enjoy it as a new great HIL album as it is...
To me this sounds their best since Hollywood.

Missed the easiest summary of all time: Heavier Fruit
I loved White Bat, I love this. Stop ranking all albums when it's so heavily influenced by nostalgia. Besides, Sour is the most I Am Hollywood song of theirs since that album.
Pretty surprised that no one has mentioned the Muse inspiration of Circus Circus

Truism. That guitar line is gorgeous

there is absolutely nothing wrong w preferring a bands older output tho. also as someone that only got into this band like two months ago nostalgia is def not the only reason ppl might rank those albums higher lol, but likewise that doesnt mean this doesnt bang in its own right. they changed up in sound enough across their discog anyway so i kinda expect most ppl to rank em differently

Happy to see It Hates You getting the love it deserves. Feel like it falls under a lot of people's radars when it comes to evaluating their discography.

after a few more listens I think this is just behind poison for me. there's like no filler on this, and the band sounds like it's firing on all cylinders. the drums in particular are unhinged

Fuck yea their drummer is outstanding. Some insane grooves on White Bat, now he's gone full metal and I love it.
btw my Muse reference was in regards to Citizen Erased. I feel like that riff and the one on Circus Circus are pretty similiar. Tones are somewhat influenced by it as well. Maybe just me though :D

Seems like everyone is enjoying Circus Circus a lot, but it's one of my least favorites on the album, along with Sink Hole. Return to the Garden, Endless Hallway and Lord Slug are the top tracks for me right now.
As far as album rankings, it's early but I'd put it next to Heavy Fruit near the bottom tier. Admittedly I'm biased seeing as these guys have been my favorite band for a long time now, so even their "worst" stuff will probably be a strong 4 in my book. Nostalgia bias is not a factor for me either, I've been listening to them since 2006 and White Bat ended up being my favorite album of theirs, just ahead of IAH.
