goddamn this was worse than I expected, closer almost manages to be good and then devolves into that same octanecore bs they've been pulling off for 10 tracks

As somebody who actually enjoys FTTWTE, I've had a difficult time with this LP. While I'm happy when bands venture outside their comfort zone to experiment with their signature sound, I haven't been able to truly embrace their new direction here. This is a thoroughly mainstream record, and while I appreciate them wanting to change things up ten albums in, I'd prefer Architects sounding more like they did on Daybreaker and LF//LT. I'd prefer that, but I'd still like to give their new sound the chance to pleasantly surprise me. Coming off my first couple listens, I'm put off, but I'd be willing to bet that I'll warm up to it over time. It's not without its charms, but I'd be lying if I said TCSoaBS left a good first impression.

“It's obvious none of them have the musical mind he had.”
Totally. I don’t have anything against them personally and to find themselves in the position to write their own parts, especially with the history they’d already had and built up to that point, must have been difficult as fuck, not to even mention the personal loss. I don’t like the direction they’ve chosen, but that’s about it. That and I don’t really enjoy most of Sam Carter’s clean moments (old and new material).
If anything, they’re in a crappy spot where if they tried to write like Tom did, it’ll probably be underwhelming, and a new direction would have to be really well done to compensate. And, in terms of writing, most of the band having to figure out what to do and how to write, they don’t have the collective juice and it’s gonna disappoint many. Anyway, I’ll poke fun at their new shit, but it’s more “oh, well” overall. They’re probably doing well enough financially and they’ve plenty more life to improve, so it’s no big deal either way

Well said Willie. It depends on your past experiences with a band. Having limited experience with Architects is allowing me to enjoy this for what it is. On the other hand knowing Parkway Drive from the beginning and their sick early stuff completely overshadows their later stuff for me

Im treating the last record and this one as as a whole new band really. Like Willie said they where caught in a tough spot. Overall i think they have worked out this new sound and direction now.Sam has the vocal capacity to do the poppy stuff. Also you can see they tried with Holy Hell to use what scraps they had left of Toms work but ultimately decided to not ape or try and recapture that, which i actually respect. Ive a soft spot for the band, which i may explain in a list sometime

You nailed it Willie. I wrote something to that effect in the review but edited it out. But yeah, that’s exactly what it is. I do understand why there is backlash to a degree, but Christ, these albums aren’t bad, they just aren’t architects sounding, or original for that matter. But, I do have a bit of fun hearing a good portion of the songs

a gonzo 3 for mainstream metal is like a 1.5 for other people

It is crazy to think that Josh from Sylosis came into the band and released the worst and more simplistic albums of their discography. The album is ok, bit sounds too much like BMTH but without the incredible talent that they have for hits.

never understood the appeal of this band

The appeal is in the BLEGH
They lost that and it’s all been downhill
