The only benefit to this review is that this Laurel Halo album rec'd is pretty cool

Man, I don't see what's so different about this review's content (aside from its contrary position) that's got people's gruts all tied up. Stating whether or not particular moments or techniques are effective is a pretty basic tenet of appraising something, even if it is basically subjectivity in motion. Like, you can disagree, but let's just calm down about it and not act like it's some glaring fault on the part of the reviewer. There's a whole ass paragraph talking about what works and what potential lies within that I would argue balances proceedings pretty well, and criticizing something for meandering formal fuckery and citing examples seems perfectly valid to me

Well I dislike that Johnny constantly tries to take the contrarian position, and that he felt like he had to write about it when there is already a great review that will now be overshadowed, but sure he doesn't have to like the album and is overall a great writer even if it reads as a more complex way of just saying "I don't get it"

Once a year Sputnik collectively decides to take the most tentative baby step outside of its comfort zone to hype up the tackiest album you’ve heard in your entire life
Plane is on it. There are the bones of a good album here and scraps of tasteful ideas that quickly get washed down the garburator but even tho it’s a mess I kind of respect it.

It’s got that Prince Rama thing going on where it’s like “this is pretty cool but also super bad”

Concrete is the single I heard and I hated every second of it so nvm I'll be avoiding this

Agree with the rating but not the reason.
Album is just boring. It feels like it's going for a "so random" type of vibe but it's terribly predictable. It's pretty standard pop music with a touch of weird to pretend it's deep.

really like the creativity on show here but it feels a little bit thin musically. the synth choices are kinda so-so, would love to hear a more full orchestral backing on their next album

the fact I don't think this is terrible is possibly deeply concerning, left me wondering when I received that bump on the head
