“ Old school hip-hop was innately invigorating and inspired because these artists were creating a culture to carve a space for themselves in a world that was actively trying to keep them down. The culture and the politics were crucial to the essence. And these artists were literally digging through their parents records and ingesting THEIR culture and spinning that into their own. The entire process was almost spiritual in that regard. It’s inspiring as fuck. The culture isn’t the same anymore, and technology and separation from the parent generation has neutered the sampling and production process both of its power and its involvement. It’s easy now and there isn’t that degree of sentiment to the process of sourcing samples and flipping them. Now with todays tech anyone can make beats and has access to the entire worlds worth of sample material at their finger tips immediately. There’s no heart to it.”

I actually think people like Madlib and Alchemist and Big Ghost and these producers that have been doing it for years are introducing really interesting elements into their best production these days. But also like… outrageous difficulty and technical skill =/= immediately more enjoyment of the product? TLDR this is a boomer lite take

I didn’t say anything about a correlation between difficulty / technical skill and immediate enjoyment. I said that it was impressive and inspiring. I just happen to enjoy old school hip hop more and explained several reasons why it resonates with me more. Disagree about those producers, or madlib at least considering neither of the other two are old school hip hop producers in any capacity nor are they any good, but that’s your preference and that’s cool *ehem* I mean lol ok zoomer

I suppose thats true to varying extents. I think it’s particularly poignant in regards to genres like Hip-Hop and Jazz however. They were the means for a lot of African-Americans to reclaim a sense of the culture and heritage that was ripped away from them. I think that’s really powerful, and I don’t think many other musical cultures really come even close in terms of the kind of passion there is behind that.

Yeah idk what’s with the production on this, beats are fine but it sounds like everything is clipping at certain points and all the stuff BT does on it has this wacky fuzzy drive on it. Idk if he was trying to make it sound gritty or more “raw” or what, but it definitely takes me out of it a little bit.
