@rowan I’ll try it again because it seems to be a highlight for a few people now. Admittedly I skipped that track halfway through cuz I was not feeling it at all

The Raekwon one is definitely one of the worst too agreed

"wonder how long they sat on that DOOM verse"

Far as I know that verse existed for quite some time, but was just thrown onto this song. It's from Notebook 03.

Not really. Sounds like that's more to do with your own expectations, etc.

Hip hop has been working as an influence in other genres well, especially pop and electronic. As a genre proper it has been boring and derivative for years

Here’s why sample based hip-hop is dead imo: politics, culture, and technology

Old school hip-hop was innately invigorating and inspired because these artists were creating a culture to carve a space for themselves in a world that was actively trying to keep them down. The culture and the politics were crucial to the essence. And these artists were literally digging through their parents records and ingesting THEIR culture and spinning that into their own. The entire process was almost spiritual in that regard. It’s inspiring as fuck. The culture isn’t the same anymore, and technology and separation from the parent generation has neutered the sampling and production process both of its power and its involvement. It’s easy now and there isn’t that degree of sentiment to the process of sourcing samples and flipping them. Now with todays tech anyone can make beats and has access to the entire worlds worth of sample material at their finger tips immediately. There’s no heart to it.

So now production is the key element to what makes hip-hop interesting instead of any of that. And hip hop influenced production in genres like neo-soul, alt-r&b, garage, and pop music at large is kind of just going to be inherently more interesting in that regard for a genre that is generally repetitive and vocally homogenous. And when most modern rappers seem to share a brain cell they can use all the extra help they can get from diverse singers, songwriters, and producers

It’s funny, pop was kind of old school hip-hop’s undoing but also kind of the one thing that makes modern hip hop salvageable

The mf doom song is insane, just probably the two most technically outrageous rappers ever demolishing the beat

Such a treat hearing DOOM still these days. Very thankful for it. There’s probably such a treasure trove out there, I imagine the posthumous stuff will never truly end
