idk i feel like the synthesis of pop and prog is pretty well done here. the melodies are huge but the technicality is very much there. i don't feel like they're diminished at all, just working better in tandem w/the pop elements. then again like i said before -- not the biggest coheed fan, so what do i know

This review fills me with dread for the band I once loved. Never really clicked on Vaxis 1 tbh but I should probably give it another go sometime along with this. Seems polarising so maybe I’ll love it!?

Definitely polarizing. A lot of longtime fans will hate it. I didn't like most of Vaxis I all that much either. Some real stinkers on it and a few good songs with a lot of average in the middle. I think this is a good step up from it.

Coheed have usually mixed pop and prog more successfully than other artists for the most part

^yuh, for real. I don't really think any of this amounts a blend of pop and prog at all (other than the last three) - most of it is just bottom of the barrel mainstream pop [hard] rawk whateverness

"Do you hate fun?"

YES END ALL FUN IMMEDIATELY

something tells me that you've never listened to "bottom of the barrel mainstream pop rock"

"Keywork" typo in the second paragraph.

Better than Vaxis I and the songs will be much better live as always.

Man...the first listen didn't do much for me.

That sucks, I liked all the singles.

I always prefer their poppy side. Thinks it's why I love Descension so much, and why I enjoyed this

I enjoyed the latest Prize Fighter stuff (More Than Love, Death Rattle etc) which definitely helped me to enjoy this more. Even that was divisive so bringing elements into Coheed was bound to ruffle a few feathers.

I'm kind of done with songs like The Dark Sentencer (basically Domino but more meandering) and the band sounded like they were running on fumes for the majority of the last record. This album won't be for fans who wanted more of that kind of material, although Ladders might be their best proggy song since Willing Well II.

Each song on here has a bit of their own identity, which kept me intrigued with what was coming next. Blood and Our Love are my least favorite here, but there is so much fun to have on this album, I'm really not trying to dissect it too much and just enjoy it for what it is.

Then I go and listen to Key Entity Extraction V and forget how fucking epic that track is.

""Keywork" typo in the second paragraph."

oh yikes, thanks - gonna chalk that one up as an autocorrect

"the songs will be much better live as always"

hope so! Coheed have been big fun every time i've caught them, and i've pencilled in their show this autumn

Loved these guys so much growing up but found them a little stale since the second afterman. This however is a breath of fresh air for me. Absolute banger and not what I expected at all. Not even close to being a 2. The songs released early are the worst on here for me.

Are you angry though? (sarcastic smile)

Yep, it's more pop than prog (as in infinitely more), but is it really really bad? No, I don't think so. I also agree with everyone who said that at least it's not an 80 min "wish-it-was-an-epic", when certain trimmers could cut away 40% of the fat. Coheed is f'n pop these days, and you can't deny (and the review certainly didn't deny) the appeal of "Comatose" for instance. This is harmless fun, enjoy it! Really, just enjoy it for what it is. It's not even remotely bad on its own. Let it go, let it go...
