"we will write them off with a pretentious excuse (a side-effect of true experimentation) and focus on the core of the album" got me chuckling lol grrrrrrrrreat review

Okay so, after a couple of plays, this is a lot more subdued than I would have expected, but the result is some incredibly chill tracks like the title track, eye in the wall, and photograph. Was upset initially because I wanted songs along the lines of wreath and slip away. But yeah, this is an incredible album, connected with it a lot more on the second play

I'm glad he moved on from pop since there's no way he can top "On the Floor"

It’s definitely eclectic in the push and pull between the abstract stuff and the more pop and dance stuff (if that’s what you mean by soundtrackyish) but I (on first listen at least) feel like it holds together pretty well.

Nah, I mean some of it was ambient and sounded like something that would play in the background of a movie

I mean this was built off of a dance exposition and there is an associated film so in a sense I guess it is kind of a soundtrack.

I've already listened to this in full 5 times since it dropped yesterday and I really think it's one of those albums best heard as a whole.

There are certain songs here that still do well individually but otherwise this like the queer side of the moon.

Witnessing you trawling through this album for the first time about three minutes ago and then seeing this triple axel of a review scythe smoothly down onto the ice has got me all revved up. Excited for this album, Perfume Genius always struck me as having much potential that was rarely mined (but very good when it was!)

i find i stay really attentive when i'm listening to this, it never really slips into background music territory. the ambient sections aren't without dynamics, not repetitious for their own sake. it strikes that perfect balance. i'm sure it's very effective in its soundtrack role but it very much stands on its own too

I totally agree with that. This completely envelops my attention when it's on; it's too striking to fall into the background.

It may have been written as a dance score (I highly recommend the accompanying visual component), but I don't think of it as just a soundtrack either. I stand by my "Queer Side of the Moon" remark -- this is very elaborate and complex, entirely unified musically & conceptually, and feels groundbreaking in its unique context.

This is a great "album" in the holistic sense of the word. Not sure any of these tracks will make my 2022 singles compilation, but the album itself is already one of my favourites.

You're definitely right that it's a full album experience. I do think Photograph makes a damn good standalone song however!

This album is best as a full album experience for sure, but 'Pop Song' was my song of the year all the way back in 2019 when he dropped it as a single. I guess it will be my favorite song of this year too.
