five listens in: still inconsistent af
singles are definitely very very easily the best songs on here, opener would round out the top 5

Across the way moved in a pair
With passion in its prime
Maybe they look through to us
And hope that's them in time

I think Doof may have said this somewhere else, but the way the opener lulls you into thinking it's just a tone setter before it really starts building is brilliant.
The backing vocals/harmonies have always been the band's secret weapon, here more than ever.

At the time I couldn't get into A Hero's Death at all, but this is lovely.

It is already the Best Album of the Year.

I like this one better than AHD, but Dogrel's still where it's at for me

I'm very fond of Dogrel but when that album came out, as great as it was, there was still always the feeling they hadn't quite developed their sound yet, ditto for Grian and his writing.

Did not expect this album to be as sad as it is. Hits like a ton of bricks

'I'm very fond of Dogrel but when that album came out, as great as it was, there was still always the feeling they hadn't quite developed their sound yet, ditto for Grian and his writing.'
Dogrel sounded like a new voice/perspective...over a sound I'd heard a lot of times before.
The music is getting its own 'more unique' flavour (I know it still has some obvious influences) to match the vocals now.

Yeah the vocals were definitely a huge part of the initial appeal, the current wave of British and Irish post-punk had already been going on for a few years at that point.
The appeal balance between vocals and music has gradually shifted with the following 2 albums, especially now they're drawing from influences like the more gothic end of post-punk, shoegaze, etc (though definitely with their own spin).

Another great album by these guys. Lovely mix of accessible and experimental stuff on here. Favourites so far are Roman Holiday, Jackie, I Love You, Nabokov and the S/T.

i thought the opener was super boring, but some of this is great. i'm definitely not seeing the claims of this being a masterpiece though, feels a bit uneven and some of it bored me or just sounded a bit same-y after 1 spin, but it seems like there's some potential for it to grow

There was a commenter on the Rolling Stone FB page who was looking for new rock bands because she was sick of MGK's face being plastered everywhere; this was one of the bands I suggested her. Doin' the lord's work out here :]

Hey, sometimes you have to dive in headfirst. I didn't have any gateway bands like Metallica or Iron Maiden when I got into metal, so The Sound of Perseverance by Death was my very first metal record (unless you count 70s Rush as straight-up metal, which I don't)
