fair enough; I think Mr Blue is a top-15 maybe even top-10 FJM song

and the whole album is "boring" in terms of energy/variation but it strikes this classy throwback vibe that I really dig

this is currently contending with pure comedy for my #2 fjm record

You're definitely right that his personality is a huge part of what makes his music fun, because he uses humor to both repel & attract. But that's precisely why I love Mr Blue; it feels so uncharacteristically vulnerable.

could be that too; honestly I haven't done any reading in terms of his intentions with the album

GFC was sort of a dud for me; I remember thinking a few songs were catchy but ultimately not caring -- I probably haven't listened to it in 3+ years so I might need to revisit it

I think this one is my least liked FJM album so far. It's not that any individual song is bad but as a whole, the album is a bit plodding. It should have been right up my street.

if you're desperate for nostalgia for "the good old days" I can imagine coming back to this more than twice

Honestly one of the weirdest things about this album is that because it's FJM I expected him to be taking more of a critical approach to nostalgia, problematizing the era he's evoking rather than glorifying it, and while there are some moments where he does that he ends up playing it pretty straight most of the time.

I think there's better vocal jazz and contemporary big band music than this. Not only is Josh not as good a singer as other crooners but the melodies here aren't very interesting. So even as a record that might evoke nostalgia for me (as part of my love of this genre comes from a particular nostalgia), it doesn't stack up, in my opinion.

Gregory Porter - If Love is Overrated (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na01DRa_XH0)

Gregory Porter - Black Nile (https://youtu.be/HraBtBdkHg0)

That said, I think there's a lot of artistic merit to this record and you know, I wouldn't judge it harshly at all. Even though I think he's outclassed in the genre in terms of both his contemporaries and his predecessors, it still has its own identity and creative spark.

I think it would have been nice if he subverted it more rather than play it too straight where he is a little outmatched. Maybe something closer to the contemporary twist that artists like Hamilton Leithauser puts on his retro music.

I can go if you want me to. Pigeon nests are quite flimsy anyway. Easy to relocate. :-(

I preferred that FJM as well but I don't disapprove of this one as much as most of you

Honestly I was close to falling for this but it dropped out of rotation due to all the more engaging stuff that dropped around it.

The new Andrew Bird has a little of this sound in there but have to say I greatly prefer it.

Sounds like someone incorporating influences into their style rather than magpie'ing stuff to make predictable pastiches

Also his vocals are way less tiring across the whole album

Andrew Bird has been doing that for a while, right? I remember his album My Finest Work Yet was quite like FJM, too.

Yeah, a lot of this is rather middling but a couple really great tunes and that's my favorite of the bunch

This and Lana Del Rey's new album have become my two go-to albums to have on as background music as a work on flights. Honestly shocking how many times I have listened to this lol

Also, I think I was right and Joe has left us lol
