I can definitely understand the appeal of the record. It has a lot of good qualities, but it's lacking the register of a strong crooner who can modulate their voice, take themselves to interesting places.
There is one chord on this album where FJM goes down and it's like "Okay! That was a nice chord!" But his falsetto has always been weak to me. As I said before, too, the melodies are not strong. Feel like he could write these melodies in his sleep at this point.
Compare this to something like Gregory Porter, as a modern example, doing the same big band crooning and it's just so night and day to me how a confident voice that can modulate will carry a simple melody to good places. Some of you may still find this to be elevator music but to me it's the sort of place a romantic ballad should be. https://youtu.be/x-wtXdn93Iw.
'Easy listening' music has a lot of heart and I don't think it needs to be subverted to be engaging but I don't see this record growing on me. Hopefully I'm wrong. We'll see... That said, maybe an approach like Lambchop's Showtunes may have suited FJM better.

An album more in line with the closer might have worked - a bit of Lynch-Ian darkness and an ‘out of its own time’ atmosphere needn’t have equated to something as redundant and dull as this.
I don’t know, after two pretty tedious albums I’m not sure I’m that invested - it’s a lot to ask that a writer who has his limitations like FJM clearly has, can keep freshening it up, I sort of get it, I even understand why he went in this direction. Some people love this so fair enough.

Thanks for the kind feedback all. This album was a slow grower for me, so totally get the more negative perspectives here. My first listen was probably closer to a 3.0, but I moved up to the 3.5-4.0 range after 4-5 listens through.

Some of this is nice, Chloe, Buddy's, Q4, but not sure how I feel about this as a whole

If this was 30 something minutes long like his last album I'd like it more

I feel you. I'm not sure some of these songs sustain my interest for their almost 5 minute durations. I'm not willing to write it off just yet, though because the songs' narratives are yet to hit. The arrangements seem to do the brunt of the work, though.

Ya I don't really know what he's singing about, I just meant sonically it's a bit draining

My feelings are all over the place on this one, and that's coming from someone who really loves his previous 4. Nice arrangements but it goes on a bit.
