@Project For sure get where you're coming from. I think the production really messes with some moments of the record, which could have been improved with some sharper presentation, but tbh I couldn't really imagine this record without this style of production. The fuzz suits the vibe. Feels more live, basement pop punk mellow stuffs.
Also the closer is top 5 PUP.

I've previously ignored PUP but this new album is excellent and has me thinking that my previous dismissals were unfair. Gotta give this band a full re-do. Nice review by the way.

@madrigal my best guess is they just wanted to try a different vibe. If you go into this expecting the levels of umph of their previous stuff, it is disappointing. There are layers and layers to this tho that tbh aren't present on any of their other records ("Habits", for example, has a tonne going on). They also commit to a slower tone on stuff like Cutting... and Grim Reaping and stick with it for the whole track, which they've only ever really done on Pine Point from my vague recollection. Idk, its another page in their canon that doesn't sound like the last but builds on their previous material, which is all I can really hope for.

slower songs not necessarily my issue. the coast, pine point, yukon and city are all among my fav pup tunes. i just really really dislike the focus being shifted away from their clear and immense talent as musicians to a sort of subpar muddy production that adds "vibes." where are the bonkers solos from s/t??? the straight up wild tones of tdio?? the soft and intimate vocal croonings of ms??? the shout along choruses of tpsa??? i think this variation was not needed, only refinement

I'm in no position to comment on this album within the context of their discography, but generally speaking I have no problem with a band occasionally sacrificing aggressive vocal/instrumental delivery to round into form something as thrillingly carefree and catchy as this. Also, I'm listening on Spotify on my phone and don't yet hear the production issues, but I'll listen on proper speakers soon to see if I agree with some of the complaints I've been reading. Once again, I don't know enough about PUP's previous LPs to technically know what I'm missing, but as a standalone experience I'm finding this to be a pretty tight pop-punk record overflowing with fun vibes.

Atari clued me in about PUP around the time that The Dream Is Over was released, and I recall thinking it was good but not really my style. I think I skimmed over Morbid Stuff and probably never gave it a dedicated listen. So there's definitely some backtracking to be done, but for now I'm just enjoying this.

TDIO probably isn't your style, but they softened their edges, taking a more pop forward approach on their Morbid Stuff and continued down that route with this.

Morbid Stuff took me a good 2 years of on and off listening to fall in love with. I immediately fell for Dream though. Ridiculously good record. Both are 4.5s in my book.

I had only listened to Morbid Stuff before this and I think that record has more intensity, tighter hooks and definitely cleaner production than this
but the vibes on this are still real good
