This band always feels like a great idea with poor execution.

They are one of the funniest bands around and exactly their mix & match of completely unrelated sounds makes them stand out. Truth be told I hoped they went even more commercial on this one and kinda shocked they didn't do a "Devil is Fine" or "Gravedigger's Chant" song style which is where the muney was.

I really enjoyed Fruit but this album has much stronger execution. And if you think about it, the concept really isn't that bizarre. Call and Response music combined with the tortured ferocity of black metal is genius. Yeah, this album has more numetal riffs than previous outings but that doesn't diminish the fact that the energy on this is palpable.

I'm glad all y'all can enjoy it. And you're by all means welcome to. I'm aware of how the band operates in terms of having crazy ideas, but i find that it doesn't pan out well and makes for songs and albums that are entirely too disorganized. It's perfectly fun so long as you keep it surface level.
In terms of the call-response stuff, it just sorta wears out its welcome. The black metal hardly exists on here honestly, feels v industrial/nu metal instead.

way too many chugging 0-0-0-0-0 riffs in this one imo

Listened to these guys a bit and saw them live a few years ago. The gospel-meets-black metal thingy was interesting at the very least. Curious to listen to the actual album to understand why this got such bad ratings. Great review!

I think they are an easy to hate band but pull off the clash genre muuuuuch better than e.g. sleep token
I also wish they had more jointed ideas, but I can´t force my own ideas on their own songwriting lol . I think the dude has a knack for quality melodies and he could go very much commercial and still pull quality music. the gimmick hinders their mainstream potentiality imho lol

Devil Is Fine was one of the most amazing first song introductions to a band for me in recent years. Really the only other band song in last 5 years whose first song I heard blew me away was when I discovered Rolo Tomassi seeing their video for Rituals. Zeal hasn’t had the punch since like Rolo does tho.

I felt really bad that I only listened to 30 seconds of the single but now I know why from y’all. I think maybe best to never listen, never rate.

sputnik is way less up its own ass than it used to be... 2009-2013 was much worse
