Oh yeah forget about The Ocean but they have some duds in there. This band manages to floor me in some way every time. Like Blood Upon Stone is just a band at this finest.

The Ocean are great and all but they peaked 15 years ago and haven’t even come close to replicating that since. I mean you COULD say similar of CoL (I wouldn’t)… but their evolution has consistently pushed their sound in way more interesting and new, inventive directions. The Ocean just added (sometimes good) prog elements already found in abundance elsewhere.

That’s not to say The Ocean aren’t still a fun listen and they struck gold a coupe of times on their last album, I just don’t find them as consistent or as enduringly creative within the post-metal spectrum.

I said last year that The Ocean would be imo the best band on Earth if they delivered an album as strong as the single they released ahead of it (the name escapes me). They did not, imo again, and so they are not.

But I do put them in the convo.

The three singles for Phanerozoic 2 were so good, I thought they were about to drop their best album. Some parts of the album ended up quite inconsistent though, which just doesn‘t happen with CoL.

It’s great and all, but not as great as Somewhere Along The Highway or A Dawn To Far 😉

Early Ocean is amazing actually, and it does enter CoL level in my book. Everything until Precambrian (included) is a 4 - 4'5 for me. Which reminds me I need to revisit precambrian. It could be a 5 perfectly

I think even if a 95 year old man who never heard of COL saw their last two albums song and album titles even he would be like “oh that’s a post metal band”

Btw kudos to Senetrix for the Author and Punisher name drop. Album sounds like a Deftones+Godflesh mix. Lovin it.

Despite being firmly with the 'The Ocean aren't even in the same stratosphere as CoL' crew, Precambrian is an immense album. I won't have this slander.

Author & Punisher is aggressively decent, certainly has a couple of good cuts in there.
