Let life lift me over the dark of my design

And fold me in your perfect light

Perfect light

Where I’ll find a closure

And questions I confined, a freedom

That I went the wrong ways to feel...

I am absolutely loving the lyrics on this thing.

Also the ending of "Until" is incredible, so cathartic.

Trebor.

First song is incredible.

If you like nu-Anathema.

Which I do.

anthema has been super mediocre since whbwh imo. behind my eyes stands out as easily the best thing here after one spin. i gotta say... these songs are too damn long. the lyrics are good and the melodies are tight too but i'm rly not a fan of most songs being 8+ minutes when they don't develop a shit ton over their runtime. need more time to digest it before i can confidently assert that though. for now, some pretty lovely stuff held back by length and being a bit too bare bones at times. i still can't crack that opener, it's just dreadfully boring to me after a second time hearing it.

emotional investment required throughout this tbh, if you don’t buy in I don’t really get what’s to find with this bloke’s music

definitely an ‘it’s all a 5 or it isn’t’ act for me

yeah, I think this is RHP ‘rollercoaster’ mixed with Anathema’s reworking album ‘Hindsight’ is what I feel

the second song is excellent but no better than the two ones of a similar style that follow - ‘Spaces’ and ‘Thousand Miles’

“Reveal” is lovely but indeed may be overly long and potentially patience-testing as an opener for as little development/progression it has compared even to the rest of what’s here, but that also may be kind of the point - if you can make it through that you can definitely get through the rest of this.

For the rest of the long songs, would they be tighter or more easily digestible if they were like 2-4 minutes shorter? Of course they would. But do I mind them being the length they are? Absolutely not when each one is pretty well-paced and runs with such gorgeous foundations.

Hmmm, I interpret that one as a slow build to catharsis - perfect opener imo, could be the best song here

There’s certainly catharsis in that one but more subtle than elsewhere here. I maybe just haven’t had my moment with it yet. I’m nitpicking really, all of this is quite wonderful.

I totally get why someone would find Reveal a test of patience, the first time I heard it my thoughts were along similar lines, but it might be favourite from this now.

You do get the sense that a lot of this is pulling from similar areas and much of it is slow-to-build, sparse, vaguely distant in tone (at least instrumentally), what holds it all together is that voice. Damn is it emotive. This ends up feeling significantly warmer and weirdly comforting once you find that initial connection.

P.S. I have zero context re this guy and his previous work, which honestly might have been a good thing in this instance.

Did I say the opener is boring? I meant contemplative and beautiful. Whoops. Typo there 😳

I'm still riding the high of the WFAD Live at Roadburn 2017 performance but this is probably the strongest not-WFAD album Patrick has put out. Amazing stuff

Checked the majority of it. Not for me. Felt most of the songs plodded along in a similar way. None of them outright bad, but found them kind of dull. I'd have to be in the right state of mind to go out of my way to listen to this.
