This truly is excelent. Doesn't have the hooks like the last album (which was more accessible) but overall feels much more mature. I didn't expect to hear this from them. We'll see how the year goes but this actually might be an AOTY

First impression is that this is a step up from Veil of Imagination, which is saying something because that album is amazing. Everyone just seems to have elevated their game on this one.

I can see this becoming my AOTY for sure. I don't care of it's too early into the year. Voivod may have something to say soon though...

Starting the year off right! Ye, Epi-pen is a huge step up from the last one, another one for the Opethian basket.

Re: Scheumke's "A little conflicted about this one." comment,
Passenger is one of the best songs they've ever written, ye. I initially had some misgivings about Woolgatherer's airy-fairy passages during the first third but the wider song arc has me sold with the way the main intro hook 1:40 in gets reused and built to closer to the middle point, and how the song quietly sails out on it after the apex section around 9 mins in which features likely the best guitar solo they've ever written. I'm not a fan of solos typically but its phenomenal stuff. I really love the two main chord progressions used in the track and find the leads that accompany them really memorable.
Identifier is probably my least favourite track here and even then, its got some of the best rhythm work in the band's discog. The way the 5/4 passage in the first third evolves before, during, and after the solo is really flawless stuff. The two chord 6/8 passage they sprinkle throughout the first half, while a little uninspired, is a fantastic glue between a lot of differing ideas and lets the band easily segue into the song's opening progression for a second time around the 6 minute mark. Track's also got one of the tightest, fuck you type riffs they've ever written and its cool to see a chuggy riff from the band that only uses palm muting as dressing. Isn't as much to grip onto in terms of melodic motifs but the rhythmic stuff is pure gold imo

Last album had the perfect balance of DM and prog but this album is a little more proggy and self-indulgent than I prefer but it’s still an enjoyable album. Either way, this is the direction I wish Opeth went after Watershed.

I was expecting something a hell of a lot cheesier under the symphonic folk metal tag. My image of symphonic folk metal is probably stuck in the 80s and 90s. Tried the first two songs, but didn't dig enough to keep listening for the full hour.

Surprisingly, I think "Woolgatherer" might be my favorite on here after a couple initial spins.

Yeah Woolgatherer is quite the epic. The melody that runs throughout is an album high point and the way the song kind of fades in and out the link the pieces together is a great way to frame the track. The solo just goes and goes, great stuff

Faded, the songs after the first 2 change pretty drastically, I suggest trying Passenger or Distraction II at least

Honestly, it's obvious Passenger is great but Identifier is a 5 material. I see that not everyone is sold on it but for me it's in top 3 tracks from them. It's like a combination of BTBAM, Caligula's Horse and their own style from Veil. And these beautiful few female lines in the back at the end. Absolutely crazy how good it is
