Never heard this band before but holy Steve Wilson with some Ghost Reveries sprinkled on top. Went back and checked your review to see if this band was some sort of collaboration, and wound of enjoying your thoughts on it as you mention the influences, yet acknowledge the undeniable craft going on here. It's captivating music for sure, not quite filling the Opeth void for me, but certainly very well executed.

You will! 🤔

Ramon, you sexiest beast, great write up.
I wish I'd share the enthusiasm though, the acoustic 3/4 parts should be forbidden at this point in modern prog, they are such a predictable drag and god these guys love them.
The death metal, monk choir parts though HOLY SH... that's where this album peaks, really one of the best approaches to death prog I've heard in a while.

"2.5 pretty good given you didn't even listen to half the record, gonna pretend that's a 5 by technicality"
Does it get drastically better?
|

Honestly Gyro, it does. The first 2 tracks are almost a very loooooong and fairly bloated acoustic intro but when they fire up it's when thins get interesting.
I'd say it won't change your opinion by much but you should get on the heavy parts, they're great.

"the acoustic 3/4 parts should be forbidden at this point in modern prog"
I agree! Though I find Wilderun are so good at calling back to previous segments that you can almost forgive it when the progression makes a return on a blast beat and your butthole starts quivering
Also thanks for the kind words!

This was cool but not my thing I guess
Nice review tho!

Might need a couple of spins for me to fully appreciate it. I don’t listen to much prog these days, however I like a lot of what I’ve heard.

A little conflicted about this one. Passenger was legit one of my favorite songs of the year in 2021 and Distraction is fantastic, but I can't (yet) get into Woolgatherer and Identifier. It's all quality music and epic for sure, yet after a couple of listens both songs are missing something that actually makes them memorable for me. Like, I can't tell you a specific passage, riff or melody from either song that I can recall and found particularly interesting, whereas Passenger is brimming with them.

'I wish I'd share the enthusiasm though, the acoustic 3/4 parts should be forbidden at this point in modern prog, they are such a predictable drag and god these guys love them.'
Easily the most disappointing part of this (2). Although everything else is soooooo good that I'm hoping if given more time I begin to accept them. I must admit the opening segment(s) didn't leave me hopeful; perhaps being awoken from my slumber when it finally picked up was part of their devious strategy all along? Lol

Lots of scattered moments that impress, but I'm still waiting for this to coalesce into a something that truly excites me. I want to believe...
I know we've had casual spars in the comments section before, but that doesn't change the fact that you're an excellent writer --- glad you were the one to review this.

This is an excellent album, but one of my gripes is the number of "Ahhhhhh's" with a backdrop of blastbeats kind of happens a little too often, almost like a space saver for a better idea that never happened. Regardless this thing is sweet
