album is too long for it's own good, it starts very good but overstays its welcome

this kind of tech death is the most conflicting metal genre for me. On one hand I'm in utter awe of the technical ability and truly adore the neoclassical elements. On the other hand the insane fretboard-wankery makes me want to smash the stop button after a few minutes.

Spawn of Possession showed that having too many notes on an album can be a bad thing.

First Fragment then demonstrated that including every note may culminate into a very rewarding experience.

If by rewarding you mean boring, then I very much agree.

The total number of guitar notes on this album could give Yngwie about 10 more studio albums

Idk why noddly tech death so often gets this kind of dismissive criticism as wanky and/or boring whereas other genres (math rock, jazz etc.) more often get a free pass for similar traits. I'm generalising, but still, this has way more compositional depth and restraint (comparatively) than it's getting credit for.

Because there are a lot of tech death bands with shite wanky songwriting, e.g. Obscura, Spawn of Possession, Equiposeur, etc.

Tbf I don't know the genre that well, though loads of math rock and mathcore do the same thing from what I can tell and generally get away with it with less criticism

I think that's because a lot of math rock bands still retain their focus on songwriting, while tech death bands generally try to play as fast and as crazy as humanly possible for the sake of it

because those tend to not use neo classical scales

Yeah this has virtuosity in spades and is obviously impressive in that regard but the selling point is how it’s harnessed. It never feels forced or overdone. Maybe it’s also considered overlong for the style, yet I don’t find it overwhelming probably due to how well-balanced it is. Hell, sometimes I just get lost in the melodies - when that happens screw the more overtly technical aspects.

Yeah, the melodies are the main selling point of this album
