I can’t believe death metal and grind have existed for so long and people still don’t know what triggers do on drums lol
|
| |
yeah sorry to burst the bubble but most of your favorite death metal albums use either triggers or sample replacement. like I said it’s been standard procedure literally forever.
|
| |
"the bass drum is absolutely triggered my dude. not that it matters, its essentially standard procedure."
hmm I really didn't know haha.. I guess I meant the drums have a natural sound instead of that artificial sound.
Before I dig myself deeper the drums here fucking rule haha

no worries my man it came off more confrontational than I intended.
you can be pretty sure that the vast majority of death metal records at this point have triggered/sampled kicks. the rest of the kit is a crapshoot but it’s definitely real drums here. hard to get those snare rolls on an e-kit.
and I agree they sound great. this whole record sounds great.

Hype is a cool cat i dont think anyone thought you sounded confrontational.
But anyways I have also been wondering recently what the difference is between like organic old school dm bass drums and the super fake/programmed sounding (?) Drums on albums like ophidian i etc? Because I do strongly prefer my shit to sound organic like this, I just dont know what it is that gives it that sound/distinction from the aforementioned stuff

insect warfare you say

well there's a lot of techniques producers use to get certain sounds, but most of the time it really does come down to how much post-production goes into processing the drums. here's a good article that has some cool info on how it was done back at morrisound, who really were responsible for a lot of the classic death metal sound.
https://toiletovhell.com/your-favorite-death-metal-album-was-triggered/
triggers are really nothing more than a tool to get a specific sound, and if you want really precise, evenly spaces hits, triggering really helps capture that sound. but if its tracked and sequenced to a grid it sounds way more '"robotic". and there are records that sound great with drums like that, so it all really comes down to personal preference. pretty much every morbid angel album thats not AoM is almost fully triggered kits, pete was one of the original adopters.
my overall point was that most death metal has some level of processing, and whether or not it sounds good is really just up to whether or not the producer knows what hes doing.

Interesting, will def check the article
That was one of the main things I didn't like about that ophidian I record, the drums sounding too robotic for me

As someone whose not a big fan of the osdm revival, this is surprisingly solid.

Possible contender for top 5 aoty for me with more listens.

ya re: the triggered drums thing, i think a lot of people just watch a fenriz interview and overnight just start repeating his opinions and shit. i just take it on a case by case basis, some triggered drums sound fine some dont. i dont really get into blanket statements, too many rules and youre just turning metal into punk rock
|
| |
like if i was the type of person who only allowed themselves to listen to demos and first albums id probably go crazy
|
| |
but yeah that ophidian record was a good example of super fake overproduced shit metal with no riffs, but i mean, that material sucks so its not like "trve kvlt" production value (or lack of) would necessarily help it. but when i encounter people online who think the amon demos are superior to the first deicide album im just like man stop reading euronymous interviews
