Fuck listening to this just made me re-aware again both Sean are gone from this world. That is such a sad fact.
This sounds like a more hyper-Gordian Knot disc and I cannot not vibe with this tbh.
I am listening through my sound card and good speakers and it sounds fucking terrible from their bandcamp at least lol, and I usually don´t have these many gripes with basic bandcamp streaming - I mean not best quality but. . . . Like the drum cymbals are fucking awful, they sound terrible.
But have Cynic EVER had good production? they had to remaster pretty much all their discog lol

This is much better than I expected and also very hard to listen to given all the stuff that's happened to this band in the past 2 years

If you think this sounds muffled maybe you should close youtube and start listening from a decent source

I'm listening to this with audiophile equipment and I totally get the production complaints. It's like treble rolls off very quickly, to the point where it doesn't even breath, creating that muffled kind of sound. Cynic music should lean slightly towards the "light side" it shouldn't sound treble shy because it's got ethereal and space like vibes so this kind of "muffled" sound is a disservice for them but it's not a disaster either. Pretty listenable. It gets worse when you listen through avg equipment though.

The production is obviously flawed, but ultimately it doesn't bring the album down which is the important thing here

Production doesn’t bother me. Some of the songwriting is just a bit busy and not memorable.
Too many interludes but the albums flows well so I’m not too bothered.
The Winged Ones, Mythical Serpents, Aurora, and Multiverse are my favs.

Yeah this is starting to grow on me considerably. Production apart the music is definitely Cynic at their thing, and that's good. Sometimes it sounds like lounge music but the progressions make it interesting all the time. I'm upping this to 3,5 from my initial 3 and I don't discard this reaching a 4 soon.
Thing is I would never play this over Focus or Traced in Air, never...

So happy and proud of Paul for making this record. He really moved the Cynic sound forward while still keeping what makes Cynic so unique. Its a really heartwarming tribute to his past bandmates as well. The album feels like a reconciliation of sorts, almost like Paul is expressing they'll meet again in the multiverse of atoms or the beyond. One thing I noticed is that there really isn't bass on this album, I cant tell if its Bass with a crazy fuzz distortion or just synths filling in the bass lines. Either way this album is amazing, it gets better every listen!

Yea it's a synth bass throughout. I guess they made this choice out of respect towards late Sean Malone, he really was one of a kind...
Aurora gives me chills every single time, love that song

Man, the vocals on "Mythical Serpents" are grating.

I kinda think it was a mistake not to include fretless bass on the album. I know why Paul opted not to get another bassist but those *bwahs* added so much to Cynic’s sound

Same, I don't see how that would be an insult if they just got another player to perform some bass tracks. If the public thinks that disrespectful, what do they know lol. I'm assuming the reason for the synth bass is out of respect btw and not some other reason.

Did they have a fretless in the past? Always thought it was a chapman stick + normal bass.

Multiverse Where Atoms Sing…incredible track
New drummer did Reinert justice, although he doesn’t quite have the same level of mature restraint that Sean had by Traced in Air

Yeah I think my score is going to stand at 3,5 definitely. A nice album but it doesn't quite reach the brilliance of Traced in Air and Focus. Masvidal's decision of going on with this is very welcomed though.
