this feels more like blackened mdm than any blackgaze I've heard with the clean punchy production and the abundance of melodic riffs but fuck man this rules.
serf is an instant hit!

If you haven't definitely check out their previous as well! Little more gaze-like but still packed with a punch!

i'm surprised how nobody else is distracted by how obviously this is ripping off deafheaven. i mean even when you get the past the obvious stylistic stuff - similar melodies, identical drums (even to the drum fills), even to the way the vocalist pronounces words - it's uncanny. idk, some of the riffs are cool i guess?
if someone told me this were a deafheaven album i'd actually believe them

it's clearly inspired by deafheaven yes, but i wouldn't consider this a rip-off in any sense of the term. i would say while they definitely share foundational elements, they approach the genre in different ways

i dont think this sounds like deafheaven very much but also didnt care for it very much
|

Yeah this has more riffs instead of some dude randomly yelling over tremolo picking

"they approach the genre in different ways"
interesting - in what ways? i've listened to it a few times and not been able to pinpoint much but your insight might help me focus on the the ways they diverge as opposed to the ways they're similar

Like a few other people have said, this is definitely more riff oriented and I would say doesn't rely nearly as much on crescendos as DFHVN but maintains a more consistent level of excitement throughout each song. Some songs naturally have a "climax" but they're obtained through different means. I also think that their synthesis of shoegaze and black metal is more seamless than DFHVN's, who for all they did to bring those two styles together, still sometimes feel very separated within their music.

also i feel like deafheaven approach their music from a punk mindset where mol approaches it from a metal mindset

agreed with spirit on all accounts

"i'm surprised how nobody else is distracted by how obviously this is ripping off deafheaven."
I wouldn't say ripping off so much as maybe jumping on a trend considering Deafheaven's drummer can't even keep up with the tempo with his blast beats.
