drunk blues-era waits is so good, some people skip this shit straight to rain dogs and that pisses me off

"Sounds like his first dip into his experimental side, no?"

nah not quite, this and Heartattack and Vine are maybe a little weirder than the other drunken bar era albums, but the true transition album is Swordfishtrombones

"Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" is the embodiment of Waits's ability to write picturesque detail from absolutely nothing

like, you get a picture of this person's entire life and how they feel looking back and the whole thing isn't even true at the end

like Small Change is his ultimate "sad bastard" album but this gives it a run for its money

well i wouldn't blame you for two reasons:

1) it was made for a commercial aired during the Summer Olympics (Athens 2004), which was wildly different (had orchestration, was 45 seconds to the demo/full version's 3 minutes)

2) it's a bit tricky to find unless you know where to look

edit: okay the second bit is a bit false since it's on Youtube

yeah

not a huge fan of musicals/showtunes, so any reinterpretations of the stuff is welcome to me if it doesn't have the cheese or flamboyance honestly

nah, it's a masterpiece. I view it as the ultimate drunk'd, coke'd up album. It's way more paranoid and aggresive than previous albums and it's got this dangerous vibe that the others before it lacked. I can totally see Tom's body giving up on him had he continue down that path.

His rendition of Somewhere does something to me. When he switches from his rough voice to the smooth section about halfway I get goosebumps and start tearing up. I don't know why.
