They try to sing it funny like Beck...but it’s bringing Bones down...lower than ground...beautiful ground...3 out of 5 :’(

I can’t think of another band who overall are a bit hum drum and lacking but have such an unbelievable, state of affairs masterpiece in their discog.

yeah most of their other albums you can boil down to 3 or 4 tracks and the rest is recycling but this one seems to be a case where they the either master or blueprint every type of song they'd ever pen - and it has a unified theme to boot

So yeah this is quite good but it's still kind of up and down in quality for me. Song ratings right now are something like:

1. He's Simple, He's Dumb: 4.5-5/5; just a really beautiful, drifing concept piece, this one's pretty undeniable so I won't say much here

2. Hewlett's Daughter: 3.5/5; fun crunchy tune

3. Jed the Humanoid: 2-3.5?/5; don't really know how I feel about this one; I like the story well enough but his voice is rather irritating here and it rides on that same melody - which the words often don't fit into that well - and pretty static, not that interesting musical backing for the whole song

4. Crystal Lake: 4/5: great indie pop tune here though that bloopy arpeggio or whatever throughout is a bit annoying

5. Chartsengrafs: 2.5/5; not much to this one

6. Weeping Willow: 3-3.5/5; not much to this either but it's a nice enough bit of melancholy, solid melody

7. Broken Household Appliance: 3.5-4/5; this one's a bit goofy but it's catchy as heck and the buildup is nice, the transition from the chorus back to the verse is awkward and it's a bit repetitive overall

8. Beautiful Ground: 4.5-5/5; the reprise of the melody of the other Jed song is terrible but the song itself is beautiful, the best here probably (considering the opener as more of an epic piece rather than a "song" per se), best lyrics, great melodies, desolate and sad

9. Interlude: 3/5; it's an interlude, does its job

10. Miner at the Dial-a-View: 4.5/5; love this one, another great set of lyrics and I love the concept, for some reason I'm obsessed with the Dial-a-view voice part, another great melancholic piece

11. So You'll Aim Toward the Sky: 4/5; basically just an extended outro to Dial-a-view, this one veers on being a bit sappy with the Mellotron strings but it mostly works as a closer

So again, mostly quite good, especially the last several songs, but it's taking a while for my feelings to settle, and the whole thing still leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth

Jed the Humanoid is the Fitter Happier, a bit more songful but does a similar job - the conceptual heart

Chartsengrafs is one of the their best 'almost rock/punk' tunes - wait until you reach stuff like '50%' :-(

I can see that for Jed - but honestly it might have been better if they had just gone spoken word with that one insted. That's one where it feels like he wrote the words first and then had to fit them to a melody and couldn't quite get it right.

All songs 4+ (excepting the interlude) from Doof is quite an achievement! I think the songs I love are enough to lift it into 3.5 minimum territory but if a few more grow to land on the upper end of the ranges I put before, I could def see this as a solid 4.

My problem with this album before was I didn't feel any song ranked above a 4...so as a result for the longest time it was stuck on a 4

So, my dudes - what's the best song on this album, the opener or miner at the dial-a-view?

3/5: interlude > Chartsengrafs

I may owe "Beautiful Ground" some reappraisal though, given its high placement by Boney and Doof

Track ratings average out to a solid 4 (granted, some of the lower ones might be a smidge harsh) but to me this hangs together so well as an overall package that it's honestly not too far off from a 5

Phero - nice save with that second clause, though I guess I can see why it might rank as a lesser track on here for some people. To me the clincher was when I listened to it under an actual weeping willow by a river on my old campus just before sunset on an early-spring day - it was absolutely magical

Willow is kind of the most aggressively "fine" track here - feel like that's the kind of song that you really, really have to be in the mood for. Maybe I just need to have a "moment" with it.

"Beautiful Ground" (after the intro) is kinda perfect though.

Dylan's ranking is otherwise very very good.

true, my love for Weeping Willow did come later. Hit me at the right time. Just kind of subtly beautiful
