That average just gets smaller and smaller whenever I come here

I mean hey, a 4 is still a damn good average though

Doubly so considering this is a follow up to their most acclaimed album. The potential to disappoint was pretty large.

agree with review, original Colors vastly better

Considering the negatives I stated for this album, I'm still pretty damn satisfied with it. Colors is lightning in a bottle anyway, so I don't blame BTBAM for not quite being able to live up to it

Also, now we just need a review below a 3/5 and then most of the spectrum will have been covered :]

'"my first show was 04 madly in anger with the world tour metallica with godsmack opening lmao they were awful"
Considering that was right after St. Anger, I'm not too surprised that they were bad at the time'
yes, this was an awful show....the night I saw them, Metallica's sound wasn't right either, as Godsmack was twice as loud and more clearer

You know something’s gone wrong when you’re being upstaged by Godsmack

Is this still a concert thread? Saw 3, BTBAM, Opeth, and Dream Theater in 2008. Absolute monster of a lineup, and right after Colors released. Amazing show - even Mikael Akerfeldt came out to sing with Dream Theater.

Nice! I saw BTBAM back in 2012 when they co-headlined with Cannibal Corpse on the Summer Slaughter tour... they put on one hell of a show

I'm probably in the minority here but BTBAM albums usually take really long time to grow on me until the Automata's which were really good but more accessible so they don't add or change as much to how I feel about them after further listens (though I still enjoy Automata 1 as much as their other stuff). For most of their albums it probably takes like 5-20 listens for me to completely connect with them. This album gives off those vibes from their older stuff but It's still up to time to tell whether it actually grows on me. Like The Great Misdirect just didn't grow on me; I'm sorry because I gave it so many chances but I couldn't enjoy it much.

Honestly, I feel like this one is a bridge between their newer and older work. It has the heavier and more death metal-influenced sound of their mid-00s work, while having a lot of the wank and avant-garde influences that would come to mark their later albums. And tbh, that's one of the things that I like about this record... I may have some big problems with it, but it's also a nice marker of how the band's sound has changed since the original Colors

Just posted a review where I basically took your second to last paragraph and made it into an essay. Truthfully, I think you did a better, more succinct job at pointing out the major issues with this album. There's nothing to hold on to, no core theme the music returns to.
Great read!

lol, I wasn't expecting this review to get bumped again. But thank you! I'll check your review in a bit

saw them play this whole thing last night. forgot how good paul is at guitar. he's not underrated because i think those in the know understand his skills, but he might be not talked about enough. phenomenal player.

damn bruh was at the same show
crowd night 1 vs night 2 was pretty funny. colors 1 on a saturday night, crowd was super into it. colors 2 on a sunday night... not so much. venue was clearly much less packed and there was only a real pit during revolution/fix the error. playing the less popular more laid back album on the second night of a back to back / a work night will do that i guess.
band put on a great performance though. could tell they really enjoy playing the weirder / more synth-y tracks on here.

Great album but just lacks the highs of Colors and has a significantly weaker closing track. Best since Parallax in any case.
