Cheers porc and yes yes good question. I think it's perfectly possible to get the full measure of this record on its own terms without playing to relativities (which is why I find it minorly frustrating to see these applied from within the Bjorkverse but not without) and there are definitely aspects of the artists I referenced (esp Tujiko and Yeule) that also demand an insular context. I don't really have a 'concrete' answer, but would settle on saying that you're right that legacy/lineage framings don't really need to enter into these works, but Vesp such a well-placed poster child for them in both quality and chronology that it's more than I can resist to put it at the top of the tree anyway.

If uncertain, my gut usually tells me to open a dialogue over artist commonalities with these kinda things, because that's often the best pathway to a follow-up dialogue about points of differentiation ygm. Hope that's vaguely in tune with what you were sniffing at anyhow

Would also add that the site already has a range of reviews covering what this record does entirely in and of itself but v little looking at its wider context - not that has any bearing on your argument, but hopefully you can see why I felt motivated to write on this tack to begin with

Sounds like a plan. I had to dial it back somewhat after the last few years of attempting to listen to ‘everything’ - new release fatigue etc.

I’m drunk, but even so Porcupine is confusing me more than usual.

"You should totes check out this album, Motiv"

Literally going to after finishing Colors II (again haha). It's next on the list as I do love the few albums I've listened to from Bjork.

Oh I had major new release fatigue in the end so I get you. I find it easier to stay engaged by going back to past releases than waiting for every new album to stay on top of what is going on currently.

Won't change your mind if you already don't like BTBAM but even if you liked their past releases and weren't enamored with their last few albums then it's absolutely worth checking out. Best album from them since Parallax II

Did someone who deadass said last page that Sun In My Mouth represents the heart of this album better than Cocoon while trying to pigeonhole it within trip-hop just give me flack for not engaging it on its own terms

Oh yeah Johnny not trying to undermine the review it’s a superb piece of writing and you sell your points super well

Just hit me with some cognitive dissonance cause as soon as the point’s made that this album has influence in the world outside the way the sun catches a dew droplet on a spider web I start panickin’

Lmao Colton you right, nailing the head

Licking those droplets off the web is the closest I’ll ever be to having the sun in my mouth ☺️

If I’m swallowing 8 spiders in my sleep might as well grab a couple while I’m conscious!!

She started to sing a lullaby

Origined from ancient Bjork

"In dreams' realm can no one die

Sleep safe, my little Porc"

The sun cut my eyes like a coal tonne

Drew elseworlds in the sand

My memories began to numb

And did suddenly slip through my hands

‘Porc is porcin that Johnny is genre dorkin when he should be Bjorkin. It's a classic mistake I see people make it all the time’ (2).

Okay I must admit this is a top-tier comment, in fact this is peak Colton… although whether it stands up to the test of time and retrospect remains to be seen.
