Nothing wrong with it not being your cup of tea. I found the melodies super engaging for whatever reason (esp. beloved, splinter, and electricity), and this might actually be my favorite thing the band has ever done lol.

I have never gotten into this band, would this be an album worth trying?

Hard to say honestly. There are those who swear by Switchfoot as a life changing band, and others who say they're merely boring contemporary christian pop-rock. I'm neither - I've loved certain albums of theirs and hated others. Their sound also tends to evolve between releases. Their best albums early on in their career were basically uplifting grunge-rock. This one is more restrained, moody, and dynamic. I'd personally say it's worth checking out, although it's hard to pinpoint a single song that would be predictive of anyone's like/dislike of the album as a whole. Maybe give splinter, the bones of us, or wolves a quick spin? If you click the arrows on the review's embedded track, you can hear whichever songs you want to.

This easily their best album for sure, musically beautiful and pretty lyrically engaging

First two tracks had me going "really, is this it?"
But fortunately it picks up a lot from track 3 and onwards. Still not as hype as a lot of people seem to be, but might grow on me more with more listens. I am definitely gonna return to it though, they haven't sounded this good in forever.

Agreed with tyman, I had to mull it over as to whether I actually like it more than The Beautiful Letdown or Hello Hurricane. The thing about Interrobang is that it doesn't have the highlight reel songs, but I would much rather listen to this entire album any day.
Krill's initial reaction was similar to mine, although I love the opener. The second song is a little dull and had me thinking "here we go, one good song now here comes the mediocrity" but then it took a sharp turn into super interesting and weird song structures. That never relented for the remainder of the album, it seriously is a string of excellence from track 3 onward.

This album is the best thing the band has done since Vice Verses easily. It just keeps getting better with every listen. I encourage y’all to give it a couple listens cuz it’s definitely a grower

@mynameischan interesting, because it’s insanely catchy, I’ve had almost every song stuck in my head after two listens 🤷♀️

I think my favorite song is actually Beloved, but I agree after track 3 is when it gets really good. Also it’s not passing HH, VV, or NIS for me, but I’d say it’s easily their fourth best imo behind those 3.

Yeah idk the hooks weren’t working for me in most songs. I will say now that I’ve finished listening that there are a few good tracks. But overall I thought it was pretty weak

I love that this is getting this much love. Switchfoot has always been a personal favorite of mine despite their hints of a waning career over the past few albums. I'm very content with this album, and can easily see it becoming better as time goes on.
Thanks for writing this Sowing! I hope this will help more people fall in love with the back catalogue of this group!

I see people saying beloved is kinda mid, but I personally loved that slow burn of an opener!

I could be totally off base because I'm going entirely off of recollection, but beloved slightly reminds me of Death Cab's 'New Year'. Just something about that resplendent chorus and the guitars; maybe I'm just conflating the fact that they both sing about the new year with actual musical similarity lol.

I'll have to hear that Death Cab song again, but you may be on to something. Funny enough I've jammed all the early Death Cab except Trans for some reason. I think it's because I know it'll be good and I want to save it for a special time.

This is a nice return to form. Should have been their comeback album instead of Native Tongue

This is a realization of sorts of the inspired switchfoot you would hear only in isolated spurts that rendered the last few records so frustrating. Not blown away by the songwriting but man it’s nice to hear them thinking outside the box with some consistency.
