Album is ass. Lorde is ass. But also has a nice ass.

"Instead of departing from pop to create a real folk record influenced by nature, she opted for a halfway point between Lana Del Rey and Colbie Caillat. "
this exactly. Listening to Melodrama again yesterday made me want to bump it to a 4.5, which makes this mediocrity only more annoying
Lorde's still a good writer and singer but this is just so inoffensive that it circles back around to being offensive

I was actually excited to see the closer is 6:30 but when the thesis of your album is the same trite new-age self-help BS that you try and fail to satirize, it's not going to go over well

would be so funny if becuause of the bad reception this is getting she suddenly says "yup this is totally an Antanoff album and not that much a Lorde album"

Nice review sowing, i generally agree with your sentiments. There's a line in The Independent's review that clinches my problem with this album: "songs that seem to take pride in their lack of ambition." She stretched the carefree attitude too far to the songwriting itself, leaving us with many tracks that are just so inconsequential. It's a shame, but I reckon she won't wait four years to drop the next one. I like to think that the sting of the middling reception will bring about the same response as Swift's in her documentary: "I'm making a better record" after hearing that Reputation missed a Grammy nom. One can hope.

Very twee and inoffensive, I can’t unsee the Colbie Caillat comparison. This was sadly disappointing.
