Idc if this is the best written story in the history of mankind, if the music isn't equally as engaging, it's not going to do much for me. Would much rather take an absolute belter of a track like uncle jonny even if isn't as profound or deep, it's just fun as hell. I'm tryna reserve judgement somewhat tho because it's too early to tell for sure, but after 2 listens, desperate things doesn't blow me away, nor does most of this. So far, the lyrics seem like the best part, and I mean at that point why not just listen to an audiobook?

Gyro has a point, it's why I've never gravitated to Nebraska or Ghost of Tom Joad as a favourite Springsteen album. Desperate things has some nice moments though, but some of it feels like a melodramatic slog.

The lyrics are okay but this isn’t exactly a Richmond Fontaine album :/
Americana is a genre with a lot of truly great lyricists and I’d say the lyrics here follow the approach of the music - they hit the expected notes and don’t let anyone down but little more

I'm surprised the first two tracks even got those 4.5s out of ya Doof (not that I've listened to this, just surprising nonetheless)

ALA, they aren’t the first two songs on the album btw - but yeah the album has two keepers ;)
Americana is one of my main genres and I quite like The Killers, maybe slightly generous but in the spirit of thread harmony thought a couple of 4.5’s felt right
I mean the album isn’t exactly ‘Wildflowers’ by Tom Petty or (yup) ‘Nebraska’ by Springsteen but it’s got a bit of both of those in there, it’s alright

Gonzo it’s more the album has a flabby middle
Title track and ‘Desperate Things’ right the ship a bit later on

Doh!
I thought we were seeing a real front-loader in action

Nah, a lot of people saying the opener is best but I think the title track is the prettiest tune and sort of a good summation of the sound of the album - does the job of a title track really well

Nice to see we can both agree that Cody is top tier and Runaway Horses blows ass

Yeah, feeling a 3 on this one I think

Sounds about right, I was torn between a 2.5 or a 3 - but I have the debut on a 3 and I just feel that is better than this for having their four best songs on it, although I concede this is consistent in tone and all that

v close to my ranking Luc nice. would just have West Hills up a few and Getting By a bit lower

Honestly a varied trio like Mr Brightside - Human - West Hills makes me really consider to give the discography a proper shot.

Kind of the opposite I’d say - with every release the next ‘Best Of’ compilation gets a little stronger/looks more appealing
