Agalloch has always been hard to place into one subgenre. Like The Mantle had a lot of prog, a lot of post rock, neo folk, black metal, I think post metal is as good as anything else. I remember some guys I used to talk to back in those days called it "gray metal." I've generally called them atmospheric black metal but that's not completely accurate. Post black, whatever.

I don't know what I'd call Astronoid.

Astronoid? I can see it. There's some black metal in their sound and a lot of shoegaze. Feels kind of reductive though.

Good stuff, but I can't help feeling it leaves something to be desired when compared with the doomiest side of Chelsea Wolfe.

@Voivod Just gonna repost my comment cause it got blown by in a haze of other discussion and I feel like I'm in your camp with the Chelsea Wolfe comparison. I do believe King Woman is making the music they (or she?) wants to make, but the clean production is highlighting some short comings when compared with grungy doom-light contemporaries (ERR+Thou, Wolfe, SubRosa, etc.)

Feels like some concessions might’ve been made for broader appeal, but if this turns a couple normies towards doom then I’m all for it.

OH? Are they doing stuff together??

I like this one more than the ERR / Thou album but not way more, just a tiny little bit. About Wolfe, I guess it depends on the album too but I feel Wolfe has a creepier, more gothic, more... vampiric vibe than King Woman so I didn't think about comparing them. This really reminds me of Life of Agony circa River Runs Red for some reason.

Yeah I love Chelsea but I don't really think King Woman is that similar.

This is more straightforward sludge/doom, and like Dewinged said Chelsea's brand of metal is more gothic.

I also can't see Chelsea doing some of the harsher vocals you hear on this record.
