don't understand why that's a lot of fans' favorites. I always thought mayh had a number of weak moments in comparison to other opeth albums

Noooooooo!!!! It doesn't!

It's my fave on most days too. Perfect blend of their acoustic/distorted moments, perfect vox, perfect melodies, atmosphere, groove.

Just out of curiosity, what are the moments you'd consider weak?

I haven't listened in a while so I'll listen today and update. Or maybe I'll eat my words. Some albums take years to fully click with me. If I recall though it was the instrumental tracks and also towards the end of the album the songs became more forgettable (though I did listen to Karma recently and it bangs so again maybe I'll eat my words)

Credence isn't their best prog rock song fs, but Karma is great fs. That melodic section @5:00 is fantastic.

Yeah the melodic section of Moolapse Vertigo starting about 45 seconds in trumps any melodies on any melodeath record ever

Especially when that acoustic guitar joins in and blends with the electric guitars... love it

‘in the 90s they had such a great knack for melody’ (2)

yeah, this knack got progressively less good with time tbh. Earlypeth >

V true. Their pre-prog rock albums after this still have some choice cuts though
