Eh you know what I think I’m bumping it down to a 4.5. I still think this might be metal AOTY, but I don’t think it’s as good as Pyrrhon’s last two albums, and Deuteragonist is a bit too repetitive
Edit: actually you know what I’m relistening to Deuteragonist and it’s really grown on me. Back to 5

Probably a fair share of "great music 20XX" fatigue going on before the year's half mark. It'll swing back around.

That’s true, these past few years have been great for music, especially metal

Nice review dude, was sold at Weeping Sores and Willowtip, giving this a spin now

I'm still super in love with Weeping Sores. Need to give this another listen when I can focus more attention on it to see where it stands.
|
| |
probably gonna get flak for this, but for me it's not nearly as creative as something like Weeping Sores, and reminds me of a less interesting Artificial Brain. I didn't realize that this band essentially = Pyrrhon = Weeping Sores, so that's something

I wish I understood the hype around Artificial Brain. I feel like this takes Artificial Brain’s sense of melody and gives it more of a kick. I will say Dan Garguilo’s solo at the end of “The Learned Response” is pretty tasty

Honestly man, just listening to a track like Artificial Brain's Synthesized Instict, it's got the right amount of dissonance, groove, technicality, melody, gutteral vocals. It's just a perfect marriage of elements:

Yeah man, I like a little more flashes of melody personally, but you are right this is more extreme, more dissonance less melody, and it's just a matter of preference really. I like stuff like the latest Blood Incantation a lot, and I've never really enjoyed anything from Pyrrhon personally.

Oh ok that makes sense. For the record I fucking love Pyrrhon, WPFS and Abscess Time are two of my favorite albums of all time, and this project definitely leans more towards Pyrrhon than Weeping Sores.

what the hell why is this doing so much better on RYM than it is here?
|
| |
I don't know probably cuz it's not consistently engaging. There are some interesting things going on here but it's fairly scattershot.

It definitely slows down in the middle but I feel it has a thematic purpose for doing so, and the slower songs are still really well crafted, "Tautology" especially

I thought I was hearing Blackmath here but I don't follow the genre much.
