The local alt rock station plays the title track all the time and it’s been stuck in my head for weeks. I haven’t bought one of their records since Appeal to Reason but I’m gonna give this a shot for the T/T alone. It’s kinda charming to see them still doing their thing after all these years, even though their sound hasn’t changed much.

The cover is what initially put me off from checking out this album, it just looks incredibly dull and boring, recently though, i started listening to some of the tracks and i’m actually enjoying it quite a lot, i haven’t listened to enough of it to give it a score yet, but i’m liking it so far. I still think the cover sucks though.

Actually positively surprised by this. The albums since ATR they havent been bad, rather edging just on the wrong side of the mainstream/raw balance. That goes for both the production and the overall agressiveness of the songs. This seems to be a step in the right direction at least, with songs like Monarch, Broken Dreams Inc. and Rules of Play. Would even count Forfeit as a hit considering their other ballads are really hit or miss.

The chorus on Talking To Ourselves is laughably terrible. They really just don't have anything new to offer, lyrically or musically, it seems.

This is better than TBM and Wolves. That's not saying much, though.

The album is very inconsistent, which in the case of contemporary boomer RA is good, because consistent = all shit. First half of the album is a snoozefest, but the second half suddenly picks up and McIlrath even gives an appearance of giving a fuck. Still, his voice is what brings the work down because instrumentally most of it is passable.

"Monarch" and "Middle of a Dream" sounds like something from ATR, not the band's peak, of course, but could a decent filler for better albums.

3 tracks in and this is a dramatic step up from Wolves, even though I don't like their more modern hard rock direction as much as the first 3-4 albums

Does Tim Mcllrath have any good side projects? I feel like he would still be pretty awesome in a band without boring guitars and drums

I think one of the songs played at my gym and I started listening to them for the first time since I was a little kid. I’ll say that, generally, not on this record, they were able to record phenomenal singles. I’ll have to give the albums a proper try when I have more time.
