I shan't be listening to this. Like I'm vaguely intrigued but it's not worth the effort probs. The debut and The Curse are still their most memorable stuff, even if they arguably did better later on. The Curse is a very unfairly maligned record, imo. Say what you will about the Varkatzasaurus skramz but those pop hooks are cheesy gold in comparison to their peers at the time.

this guy had some of the WORST harsh vocals I've ever heard in my life back in the day. Like straight up so horrible they are unlistenable. Last I heard he has not improved at all.

Like harsh vocals but with no balls whatsoever, and there's like no bottom end to his voice, it's bizarre. Very grating to listen to. It's like a guy who has something stuck in his throat and he's deciding to sing a song.

Damn most songs on this are under 3 minutes. How do you expect to explore any interesting song structure or build to climaxes properly. Superhero (on the last album) was a tad long and cheesy but at least it tried to be something bigger.
It's a shame though because this has the energy this band has been lacking for a while. Some songs are way heavier than I expected and it's decent for what it is for the most part. "Underrated" and "Weed" kinda fuck not gonna lie. Also the screams from bassist Marc McKnight have always been better than those from Alex Varkatzas so there's definitely an upgrade there.
Main issue outside of song length (although probably related) is the disconnect between the verses and choruses, feels really off on songs like "Catastrophe" and "Save Us". Also second half of the album is noticeably weaker ("Warrior" is a shockingly bad closer outside its percussive bridge).

"Southern California is celebrated for its sunshine and renowned for continually producing some of the world's best punk rockbands. Atreyu will dispel any predetermined notions you may have previously had of a band from this area. Depression, pain, desire and retribution procreate in a dark, lonely corner of your psyche. It's that sordid piece of yourselfthat you try and hide, deny and bury. Orange County California's Atreyu is embroiled in the struggle to break free from thisdisenfranchising abyss. Atreyu has taken a new direction in the world of melodic hard rock. They make extreme a little moreaccessible, emo a little more haunting and severe backed up with a powerful hardcore foundation. The album was recorded atthe legendary Trax East (Hatebreed,Snapcase, Catch 22) and produced by Erik Rachel. Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses is a wrenching window into the mind and heart of bandleader and lead vocalist AlexVarkatzas. Varkatzas' rich allegorical songwriting focuses on dealing with the human growth struggle and the pain and desireof relationships. Atreyu's incendiary musical alloy can best be described as a complex, passionate, emotional maelstrom oftorment, revenge, vindication and release.Song titles like 'Tulips Are Better', 'Lip Gloss and Black' and 'A Vampire's Lament'evoke a quandary of elicit images. The musicianship is technical yet fluid with a precise, thunderous rhythm section. Accentuating Atreyu's unconventional aura is the two-headed vocal delivery of Alex and drummer Brandon Saller. Alex is theferocious, menacing, caustic and seething skull while Brandon is the tranquilizing, harmonious, Elysian cranium. This vocalduality migrates the gamut of melodramatic expression creating an ethereal yet turbulent soundscape. Over the past three years Atreyu has garnered a dedicated, ardent, underground following on the West Coast. In December,2001, Atreyu released their debut EP on Tribunal Records, entitled Fractures in the Facade of Your Porcelain Beauty, recorded with producer Paul Miner, bassist of Death By Stereo. The EP has been extremely well received and immediatelygarnered rave reviews."
Jesus christ, did Atreyu's mom write that?
