I love Gojira - but one thing with them that tends to get overlooked by their fans which really annoys me is how much they recycle their riffs. Most songs on this album have a riff that you could easily identify from another one of their songs. Just seems a bit lazy.

For example, Sphinx is a decent track in itself, but just sounds so familiar to Heaviest Matter of the Universe but nowhere near as good.

Theres a riff on this album thats just a slightly different version of the riff in Only Pain. Cant remember which song it is tho and I honestly dont really have the urge to listen to this snoozefest for a 4th time to find it.

You're referring to New Found, lol. Glad I'm not the only one who picked up on that one

People be complaining as if Gojira never sounded samey with their riffs, smh

Jokes aside, I find many bands concentrated in grooves lacking much variety riff-wise, and usually I differentiate songs based on the whole package (music, lyrics, vocal lines) and not just based on an intro, but that's just me.

Yes, many of their guitar lines are similar, it has always been that way, especially from Serius on.

I find the sound too "empty", like it doesn´t sound that dense at all. E.g. see Sphinx, like I feel the fucking air between the riffs and the drumming. the sweeps on the chorus are like basic gojira, eh.

I don´t know, musically, this disc doesn´t hit me at all. happy they talk about the world dying, but that doesn´t mean they are excused from doing subpar metal (compared to their standards, like this is truly the first disc I feel they are just rehashing old glories). doesn´t even sound that. . . .ehm, commercial in that essence, so I have no idea where they want to go

Isn't the end of "Grind" a "Global Warming" reprise by the way? The "we will see our children growing" part specifically. seems like the guitar is playing that

If it is, I didn't realize it. Off the top of my head, I don't think so, but I'll have to check.

"Metal died in 1993. Only 12 good albums have been released since then (most of them in 1994, being already recorded by 1993). Metal achieved its creative peak in albums like Onward to Golgotha, Pure Holocaust, and The Red in the Sky is Ours, elevating the genre into a legitimate art form. Now, thanks to Slaughter of the Soul and Gojira, all its potential was squandered and the genre has been reduced into being mere gimmick ridden noise for drunk idiots (i.e. the lowest common denominator - stop trying to turn underground metal into AC/DC)."

Aside from like the asinine comment. . .Metal only peaked in popularity maybe lol, metal was alive and well for a loooot more years. . . Now a little bit kicked to the curb in terms of innovation but ...who the fuck is slaughter of the soul?

ah k you meant the disc

It depends on what you expect to find. For a genre that has been around for fifty years, it could be worse.
