I actually loved their debut album so I can't relate, but I'm glad someone else appreciates them now.
Other than a few hiccups I will say you and I share a lot of common likes/dislikes when it comes to music.

I don't expect the new one to live up to Garden's Gate, which to me represents the best "modern classic rock" (?) album I've heard in years.
To your point, I should revisit their debut. Perhaps I unfairly wrote it off.

In my opinion the best Modern/Classic Rock album I've heard in the ast 10 years Def goes to Royal Blood's debut album. This is excellent though.

Strange that I've never thought of Royal Blood as "modern classic rock" before. Obviously they bear all the requisite traits, but to me they felt more like classic rock revivalists, which may be the same thing after all, but to me it felt like an updated take whereas the GVF and Wolfmother types were always more like extremely well-done tributes.

It's drum and bass for sure, but it's rhythm and style lay firmly in that ACDC/Dio Hard Rock Era.
Their debut shook me to my absolute core. Unfortunately they fucked everything up afterwards.

The jury is still out for me. Was not a fan of their debut, but this album I adore. The follow-up, Starcatcher, was not great. I think the next album will go a long way in determining whether this album was just a one-off fluke, or if they actually have more to offer.

Kitsch is art and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.
This weird viewpoint of "all music must progress and adapt" is so fucking lame. Not everything needs to be an artistic, experimental, proggy fart sniff fest. Some of us just want to listen to 70s style Rock without the bullshit.
Fuck the "artistic integrity"
