A lot of the non-single tracks took a few listens to sink in, at first none of the vocal melodies were sticking with me. But yeah, album is actually very good.

How original sounding is this? Outlash that this band received was probably only due to the sketchy industry supported intensely quick rise to fame and the first album was unfortunately a cover band tbh. Review got me curious tho....4/5 huh?

re: the above point, i was gonna ask - was the hate that these guys got specifically because they were (sorry to use the term) "industry plants" - like a corporate label gathering folks and trying to make Algorithmic Marketable Nostalgia Rock?
because i mean no one adores unoriginal stuff but if it was just a bunch of kids playing songs that sounded like led zeppelin the level of backlash seems harsh. i totally get ppl being annoyed if it was an Industry Band trying to pretend that they weren't, tho
anywho i have not listened to them and am not in a rush to do so but i like reviews that go against the grain! nice work sowing

In an attempt to respond to both of the above posts, this is still far from original - it borrows heavily from LZ's aesthetic as did the debut. The reason this is better is because (1) the musicianship is much tighter, technically sound, and atmospherically expansive, and (2) they "pay homage" to more than just LZ here, I'd say Rush was also a huge influence. Again, it's not going to win any awards for innovation. I can't find fault with those who find their approach inherently unlikable. A lot of radio stations/labels/publications latched onto them as the "saviors of rock" when they first came out and promoted them as far better than they actually were/are, so I think a good deal of the disdain comes from how much they were hyped and talked about before they actually earned anything. On the other hand, this sophomore release succeeds much in the same way Wolfmother's debut did. The songwriting is outstanding, the instrumentation is impressive, and really their only sin is wearing their influences on their sleeves far too liberally. I don't expect this to earn widespread acclaim or anything, but the band is working towards improving upon their shortcomings. Oftentimes, "nostalgia rock" bands have their heads too far up their own asses to change. This doesn't resolve everything in one shot, but it shows a willingness to bend that really hit me the right way. Mainly though, I love guitar rock, and this shreds...lol.

" comes from how much they were hyped and talked about before they actually earned anything." V true honestly goes in point with my industry idea...any intense quick rise to fame will inevitably create an intense opposite reaction aha
Cool stuff seems based off those points n this rev this band is making steps forward as musicians

They also have a vocalist who will turn off at least half of the people who first listen to them, a la Geddy Lee. I kind of like him myself, but he definitely won't be for everybody.

I like him too. I don't think he's trying to be a Plant carbon copy nearly as much as Andrew Stockdale is.

No, I think he has his own sound. But he's definitely one of those vocalists who will end up on his fair share of Sputnik "Vocalists I Can't Stand" lists.

The Vintage Caravan > Greta Van Fleet [2]
I didn't like the first album, but I still think it was a bit overhated. Was not looking forward to this especially when bands like The Vintage Caravan and Motorpsycho release on the same day (who should both get waaaay more attention than these guys), but the review convinced me to at least give it a try in the next couple of days. So thanks Sowing I guess? haha

Oh god this thing is over an hour long?
My problem with this band isn’t even necessarily the music, it’s that they come across as trying way too hard in interviews and their boomer image and style is just so cringeworthy.

this is no less embarrassing than the last one, utter drivel

Good review again, Sowing.
I am enjoying this quite a bit. Would bump to 3.5 or even 4 if they cut off a few songs though. Way too long.

I like the music on this a lot more than the first album, but the vocals seriously drag it down for me. I kinda wish he stuck to the more Plant-esque vocals he had on Anthem..., because what he's doing now isn't a good replacement imo

over 1 hour long lmao

I don't think I can, with the lifetime I have left, justify to myself that I spent 1 hour+ listening to Greta Van Fleet.
But great review otherwise Sow.
