"OH NO feels like a return. Those competing inner logics of a Xiu Xiu album are the most balanced they’ve felt since the early releases, but here the guiding hands of Jamie and Angela (on harmonium, autoharp, viola, bass synth, mandolin, bajo quinto, gongs, etc.) are steadier, in total control of the malleable tone."
exactly! their last 2 LPs weren't for me but this reminded me why I love xiu xiu
and fuck, the cure cover, perfect. also loving fuzz gong fight and and the owen pallett feature

This album is such a treat. Loved it on the first go around, and it just keeps growing as the less immediately grabbing pieces (like the opener or the One Hundred Years Cover) start unfurling too. There's so so much here to dig through, all of it pre damn extraordinary.
"stewart's vocals are the absolute midpoint between nick cave and mike hadreas"
holy shit lol anat peddling enlightenment

Really great review
I feel like some of these tracks are instant classics in the Xiu Xiu canon, some real bangers

yea porc. this is amazing stuff. will definitely be going back for re-listens. to me one things for sure: this is the best record xiu xiu has ever put out. took everything - all their experiences, all their pain and anguish and all the stilted expressionism that made the last albums so charming and not only retained it but made it feel cohesive and full and... well, beautiful.
loving it so much.

Fucking feel the *exact* same way, like it's everything I adore about the early Xiu records coupled with such a precise tonal control that I imagine only comes with exploring as many aspects of their sound in depth as they have in the last decade or so, and writes some of the most instantaneous songs in the process without losing any of the depth
God damn. 🖤. God damn.

Okay some of this is quite good, but the best song is a cover and they regularly stray into that lighter territory I don’t much care for. I could definitely do without Knock Out, A Bottle of Rum and then Rumpus Room is very off-putting indeed.
Younger me is still reeling from the fact Liars collaborated with Xiu Xiu and it’s somehow bad. Stupid 2021.

Classic Doof, what’s the differential here? +0.1? It is, by the way.
I’m curious, do you like any Xiu Xiu?

No way is this close to a 5.0 after the last two sucked so bad, but I'll go for it. Pretty neat average so far.

i didn't care for girl fruit basket fruit whatsoever, but there are certainly a decent handful of tracks on here that evoke invigorated head bops
