https://metalinjection.net/interviews/chevelles-pete-loeffler-on-playing-ozzfest-touring-with-anthrax-and-embracing-sci-fi-horror
after stumbling upon this interview while looking for NIRATIAS reviews on google (of which there are literallly none, aside from one publication. somehow), all of my speculation about this album having a sense of finality to it, especially when considering songs like "Endlessly" or "Remember When", have been cast aside.
it seems like this was the final record the band had to make under their contract with Epic, and if they don't choose to stay with them, they could theoretically go independent or something else which is really exciting. if anything, this feels like a rebirth of sorts for them and i couldn't be happier with the directions they're pushing.

I still hear Chevelle and other hard rock bands on my local one

^Same, there's at least a handful of stations out there that never really stopped playing hard rock, even if there's fewer of them nowadays

As limited as a sample as this is -- St. Louis, Columbia, MO, and Cincinnati -- they play them a little, but I don't think I've heard anything of theirs that has any staying power since Hats Off to the Bull. Chevelle might be a little too edgy and anachronistic sound-wise in contrast to what's popular these days to get a lot of air-time.

The lack of online / media coverage for this album is crazy, even for Chevelle's standards. You'd hardly even know that they released an album today if you googled the band.

Chevelle still gets played at my local rock station. Heard Hunter Eats Hunter and Self-Destructor get played not too long ago

The thing for me is this doesn't seem "special". Just another enjoyable Chevelle record

"This will be my first time trying a full chevelle album..."
whoever said this: don't do that, start with WWN
"do rock stations still play chevelle? or are they still in faux indie mumford and sons mode? i honestly have no idea what rock radio stations play anymore lmao"
The big one in my city just plays a lot of 80s/90s/00s rock that was actually somewhat decent (especially when you get stuff from the grunge era), then a little of the new stuff (bring me the horizon and all that mess), but it definitely feels like they are trying not to play the new stuff if they can lmao

I don't think it's like a 4.5+ or anything, but I think it's nice to see a band that had kinda fallen into a rut capture some of the magic again. I like Chevelle most when they're focused on melody and this has a lot of that, while still bringing some good aggression (Pete's screams are kind of insane on Pistol Star)

Chevelle is the best contemporary hard rock band going right now.

Sometimes. Ours in Nashville plays Foo Fighters constantly.

Sleep The Deep sounds like the tune you'd hear in one of Banjo Tooie caves

@Jom - Thank you! I got into them with La Gargola, which remains a favorite of mine. From there, pretty much all albums released after WWN have got really close to it, except for Hats Off to the Bull which has a less interesting second half.
I would have them in this order (mainly due to how much I listened to them overall) - La Gargola, Vena Sera, This Type of Thinking, The North Corridor, Sci-Fi Crimes, This Type of Thinking, Wonder What's Next and then Hats Off to the Bull. Nevertheless, it ultimately depends on what you want to listen to on the respective day. They are interchangeable, each album has excellent highlights.

I liked this record, and it's definitely better than Fear Inoculum, but I think these dudes should change producer for their next album. While The North Corridor is very well produced and one of my favs from the band (and so is La Gargola for most fans), Barresi is usually hit or miss for me. His records often lack... punch, for lack of a better word. This could have used a more agressive focus on some of the songs and at least one more banger (maybe one of the demos he ditched prior to recording the album?). "Test Test... Enough" and the closer, methinks, could have been developed into proper song arrangements. It feels like something is missing for sure.

I definitely think a new producer would be beneficial for them

agreed, let's move on from Joe Barresi please
is it just me, or does it feel like Epic Records really doesn't give a shit about Chevelle anymore? there's been like 0 promotion outside of the band's socials for this, same with The North Corridor. and if I recall, that album was at least partially crowdfunded so it seems like their label isn't investing much.

I noticed a lot of bands have been doing that recently since the whole pandemic has started, probably saving money by not having to spend a bunch of money on advertising

"I find irritating that people like Fantano still compares the band with Tool"
Fantano is irritating all on his own.
Excited to listen to this, but not expecting it to shake up my rankings all that much.
