"while never delivering anything artistically relevant,"
my main issue with Soen, they're nice guys but I'd rather do else with my life than listening to the same s**t all over again

I hear you. It's all a matter of perspective, I suppose. Sometimes I enjoy listening to a good song, even if artistically it doesn't bring anything new. Blues and Country are two genres based on that premise.

I'm new to Soen as my partner is listening to them a lot. I don't really understand how this album is prog anyhow? Not that it's bad, it's just pretty generic to me.
Also - it sounds exactly like their previous album. Pretty sure that Deceiver has the same opening riff as Martyrs.

I wouldn't label it as progressive music either, but the guys always had a proggy vibe reminiscent of bands like Tool or Opeth, but a lot more song-oriented.

they play at prog festivals, have former opeth members, a guy that sings like half of the nordic prog landscape. . . . that's pretty much it, they were born out of the scene

Good listen. Faves are Lykaia and Tellurian, but for me it slightly tops the previous, almost on par.

The progressive elements in this band are the adaptation of what i call "old-school prog bands" into the modern rock sound pallet. It may not refer to as prog as in the matter of musical "substance" by experimenting or in terms of innovation, but you can defnitely tell this band tries to channel a similar atmosphere when they play it mellow. Opeth/Tool references are valid.

Usually when I listen to Soen I'm thinking "I'd just rather be listening to Oldpeth instead"

I quite liked their previous album, Lotus. Lets see what they have done here..

I like this record, has some really cool parts, but the mix really takes it down...

This feels very safety to me. Illusion and the song Lotus even share almost the same exact progression in the beginning. It just seems lazy. That and the production doesnt suit the music. Disappointed by this.

I know listening to prog for the lyrics is a fool's errand but this is some of the cheesiest cheese to ever cheese

Pretty great all around. About half the time it’s fairly predictable Soen (which I won’t complain about), with the rest having some nice surprises. I have not tired of their staple sound yet, which makes this record a nice listen.

Another good album from these guys, weaker than the last 2 but not a bad one at all.

Agreed, Lotus and Lykaia are stronger releases.

Good review bro! These guys peaked at Tellurian I'm afraid.
