this reminds me of when a competent band invites their talentless friend over to observe band practice and he picks up an instrument and jams along

everything about this is great so far except that obnoxiously centrally panned 4 chord distorted guitar progression

that chord progression comes together better in the second half when the rhythm guitar is going strong alongside the bass

Their last one - lotta stuff in the same vein there, this one is more about sentimental dream pop vibes

Forgot to comment on it, but a lot of Fishmans megahype has always struck me as strange and faceless and the real parts Baseline's post were p real

They're still a great band ofc, but a lot of their hyperbole in certain places is wound up tighter than feels natural

And yeah same, opener or Nice Choice is probs my fave

I think is no match for Mondo Grosso - Labyrinth, which is the best Japanese song of the last decade.

Prime youtube recommendations-core [2] not the best of the decade but it is a good song sure

@SpaceMan how'd you mean, exactly? I dig Fishmans plenty but I wouldn't call myself a fanboy and if anything I'd say the most positive end of their consensus has been the most gatekept, but maybe I'm getting the wrong end of this?

Solid review - glad to see more Fishmans write ups here. I think you did a great job of pinpointing, in simple terms, what really makes Fishmans special (without just gushing or waxing poetic - which is easy to do).

I can attest to the fact that Fishmans is a *difficult* band to write about.

I've always preferred their later, more psych-influenced work personally. The pure dub/reggae sound never really captured me, so I sat on reviewing this one, myself. Looks like you beat me to it. The best I could come up with was describing this album as "Animal Crossing-core."

Maybe I should take a crack at Uchu Nippon Setegaya, instead.

I'm just saying that liking this band and also saying "people just feel obligated to like it / some people dont even understand what they like" is silly and pretty condescending

Does sound kind of like Animal Crossing ..that first game had a very downtempo and chill soundtrack

"I'm just saying that liking this band and also saying "people just feel obligated to like it / some people dont even understand what they like" is silly and pretty condescending"

Oh yeah for sure, if you took that part seriously; ofc don't agree with it. Don't see anything wrong with liking the band a fair bit and being a little confused by apparently universal levels of love for them elsewhere though

On that note, anyone who listens to the Microphones and doesn't come away more condescending is objectively listening to the Microphones wrong
