As someone who's been listening to Taylor Swift forever and even watched her play at a state fair before she was famous, I'd say 1989 and Speak Now are her two best albums. I'd probably put Folklore in 3rd but it's not that far ahead of Fearless. I do not understand the heaps of praise and blind zealousness from fans surrounding this and folklore. Are both albums good? Sure. Do either come close to sniffing my top 10 of 2020? Not a chance. And this is coming from someone who really adores Taylor Swift.

Differing opinions are great; I welcome any new folks to sign up and write counterpieces to this staff review. Just popping in and saying we're biased because we didn't give the album the score you wanted is petulant. It just makes Taylor Swift's entire fanbase look childish.

I gotta do a Swift discography run soonish, just glanced back through the track list for Speak Now out of curiosity and I can still hum more than half of it from memory despite not having heard it in 7-odd years

So many steps forward, at least for me, on folklore. Its honestly sad to see her taking all those steps backwards on evermore.

This has some truly excellent moments that anchor it (Dorothea, Gold Rush, Champagne Problems), but the rest is so vanilla sounding. What I've heard of the lyrics has been great though - arguably her best - so I'm banking on that being the ingredient to draw me in to the rest because quite honestly the music alone doesn't cut it. The song featuring HAIM is awful but I agree with whoever in the folklore thread said that a full murder mystery concept album would be dope.

“As per usual, her ability to manipulate the music industry and surrounding circuits at her own pace is more impressive than most of her actual output - this is the kind of album that clogs your newsfeed with articles about bonus track announcements within twenty-four hours of release, before you have even heard it.“

Love this part of the review. I enjoy this and folklore enough, but everything about them and their rollout have made me feel pretty uncomfortable. Taylor Swift is essentially the face of capitalism in the music industry. Like you’ve said, there were probably tens of hundreds of folklores released this year, but they don’t have the marketing team that Taylor has had since she was what, 16? She can make anything she wants and basically be called revolutionary for it because she’s got a guaranteed market share. I’m glad that she’s exploring more and gaining independence in the music industry because that might open up pathways to more artists for success. But there’s still no denying both these albums were still carefully manicured for as wide of a market as possible. The music is good, but also so much of the praise around it essentially screams “The free market breeds innovation” to me.

Am I reading into this too much? Probably. None of this is Taylor’s fault, but all of it just makes me feel, for lack of a better word, icky

Enjoyed reading this even though I have a more positive take on Taylor's 2020 output. It's solidified my view of her as a genuinely great songwriter.

@dmathias agreed completely, it's tough because people get so emotionally invested in art which makes it difficult to navigate conversations about flaws in the industry and wider culture without tripping over someone's ego in the process.

I'm glad that it seems like people are finally starting to seriously analyze the symbiosis between the indie and pop spheres though, that's been a long time coming

biased made not only his whole comment a diss to Johnny, but the actual name of his account as well. That's pretty next level and we should all be taking notes

it would be commendable if the guy spent more than 15 minutes on this website, 12 of which were typing that comment

I'm biased as heck when it comes to Swift, I'll admit it straight up lol. I just genuinely love the woman and her music and persona occupies the same space in my heart that Jimmy Eat World does. So is my 5 just obsessive fanboying? No, I'm always honest with my favourites. I have two Fleet Foxes albums 5'd and I still think their latest is a snoozer. The Deftones remix album is rubbish and y'all know how I love them.

This album is legitimately perfect to me (or close to it, the HAIM song is a tad out of place here) and I only fell deeper for it whilst driving home from our local Christmas show last night.

the only ones who truly aren't biased are the T-Swift fans who made an account today or on July 24th, and currently have a grand total of 1 comment
