This is better than Age Of so far although basically just a more palatable version of it from what I can tell

I really really like long road home, it's an amazing single. Rest ranges from pretty neat to really boring/uninteresting. What really pisses me off is the amount of inconsecuential and frankly annoying interludes. I hate interludes so much.

The interludes on here don't do anything for me. This is moderately different from Age Of, more psychedelic, elusive, and meandering overall.

After a few listens, it could eclipse Age Of for me, as I kind of prefer this style. Age Of is very good tho; only a few tracks could be considered missteps. The bonus track Trance 1 is neat too. I'm thinking it has a little more substance and depth than this overall, but it's close.

If Boards of Canada won't make more music, I'm grateful that innovative musicians and producers like Daniel Lopatin, Stu Howard, Amon Tobin, and Kieran Hebden are prolific and releasing great ambient electronic music since this time last year.

Vocals on this one haven't annoyed me much

I dont remember anything about Age Of but I have it 3'd which isnt exactly a standing ovation coming from me but apparently I thought it was okay based off the one or two total listens I probably ever gave it

I was thinking today that an important factor for me when it comes to favourite artists is a sense of identity. All of the best artists, to me, have something distinct and unmistakable about them that prevails across their discography, even when they change, adapt, and grow. Just for example, Lapalux, Flying Lotus, The Knife. All three of them have sounds and aesthetics where you immediately know its them and you can always count on those little familiarities in character even when they evolve or go a new direction. Oneohtrix is a good example of an artist who doesnt have that imo. Whether or not I will like each new release is completely up in the air as a lot of time there is literally zero supportive tissue linking the releases together in terms of flavor, sound palette, aesthetic, etc. It's just a shot in the dark. Some artists sound like they dont know what their own identity is or something. There's something to be said about an artist where you can hear a song of theirs that you haven't heard before and instantly know who it is.

Long Road Home sounds like a random indie band making art pop

rabid fish thanks for bringing the Aleg G version of Babylon to my attention, much better than the original.

To revise my earlier comment, the interludes on GoD and this do pretty much nothing for me, but I like the two on Age Of.

u welcome, bro. It's a really good rendition by an artist that puts his own distinct spin on it. miles better than the original, too.

Long Road Home is super good

I Don't Love Me Anymore sounds like if Tycho somehow managed to make a decent song (and it happened to feature the Sleep Party People vocals)

tracks like Bow Echo, Answering Machine, Imago, and Wave Idea are beautiful and remind me of Replica which is very welcome news

No Nightmares sounds like CFCF featuring Oklou

Nothing Special is a brilliant closer

Honestly getting a lot more out of this than I thought I would.

Yeah I'd agree with that, I'd have to relisten to R Plus Seven to see how this holds up to it tho. Haven't heard that album in years

rifts is my favorite tbqh. something about all those synth textures just speaks directly to my soul. i can throw on most of those tunes basically anytime and enjoy it just as much as when i discovered them.

honestly if i had a way to track it id be willing to bet ive listened to that album from start finish more than any other album i can think of.

yeah its just a compilation of all the stuff he released up to returnal with some of the fluff trimmed out, but i consider it the definitive version of that era. nicely sums up everything he was doing at the time.
