IAETF was definitely more different/risky for them, I just didn’t feel the songs were always there. Stuff like “Oblivions” and “Where Is Her Head” are amazing while stuff like “Hey Rosey” and “So Far So Fast” are boring and “The Pull of You” is a total mess. Plus the interludes didn’t really add anything. Cut all those and I’d prob give it a 4.5, as is it’s a strong 4 for me.
On the other hand while SWB was generally pretty to the formula I thought the songs were up there with their best (especially the closing quartet) and songs like “Walk It Back” and the title track were, I thought, genuinely pretty big departures that worked superbly.

This album for now I would say bats at a pretty even 3.5-4 on a per song basis. Super solid singer/songwriter fare.

So Far So Fast is one of my favourite songs they've ever done so gotta disagree. truly have no idea how anyone can hear the t/t or Hairpin Turns and call that album emotionless but then I always found Trouble wildly unemotional so
Walk it Back is a classic, we agree there, and one of the only songs on that album that feels like an actual step forward. it's completely misplaced in the album though, as is most of SWB really. whoever sequenced that album needs a crack on the head

IAETF t/t and Hairpin are excellent yeah. So Far isn't bad it just kinda goes in one ear and out the other for me and I don't like its sequencing next to "Not in Kansas"

I kinda like that you suffer through these ridiculous, discursive six-minute behemoths and are rewarded with classic throwback National in Hairpin Turns and Rylan, but I can easily see why someone hate it lol

To me, the National feels like a spent force. I don't find this embarrassing like IAETF, but I'll never listen to it more than once.

This is worse than IAETF because it lacks any real standout songs, but it's still pretty and whatnot, just a bit flat

On first listen this is ok, quite enjoyable, but also nothing did stand out that much. Might grow a bit more on next listens but yeah I doubt it will make it into my regular play schedule

3 songs in and this is substantially better than the train wreck that is I Am Easy to Find.

Ok the middle section kind of blows.

What song are you on? I do like Silver Springs and Oh Dearie, but generally the first and last sequences are best

Loved So Little through Take Me Out to Town are snoozeworthy.

To me Distant Axis is by far the best song here. First 3 are great, last 2 are good, the rest sucks. Still better than IAETF

^ Distant Axis is literally "The Crane Wife 3" by the Decemberists
