That's true. A bit like classic heavy metal, thrash is a genre that manifested itself in all its glory decades ago. Yet, I still enjoy listening to bands like Testament, for example.

"You're kinda right now that you bring it up. I think riffs just "pop" better in e due to the higher frequencies, where as when you start tuning down the low notes tend to bleed together the farther you go down.

It's why all those "What if (insert classic metal band here) TUNED DOWN?!?!?!?" youtube videos are so lame. The riffs just lose their luster when the higher notes are dampened.

Like this shit is straight terrible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAzbnLgM8Ok&ab_channel=AndrewBaena"

Yep, that's exactly what I think too. E just makes everything sound super tight and punchy. Maybe there's a bit of nostalgia too from the 80s that we're just not acknowledging either. I know Sylosis gets a lot of shit (for some reason) but they are a great example of a metal band who writes almost everything in E and it sounds heavy and tight as fuck. Drop D not even once.

Great link too, those vids are interesting to watch but they almost never are better than the originals.

idk man

i dunk on revival bands for having generic recycled riffs, but even that is better than downtuned chugging

I believe they wanted a more up-to-date, mainstream sound. I don't think it was the right approach.

This really is a disappointment. Especially after 10 years.

Not that much good D standard metal around. Believer and Extol's Synergy come to mind. Eb standard (Revocation, Slayer on RiB, Metallica live nowadays, new Voivod) is close enough to retain the tightness and crispness of E standard and add a little heaviness. Other than that: E standard ftw baby

most revocation is d standard though? some other obvious good D standard metal would be the whole Death discog, Winds/Nihility by Decapitated, Idolatry by Devastation, quite a lot of Mastodon, about half the Psychotic Waltz discog, numerous others. It's really common lol

fwiw i think the tuning cutoff point where the gain in heaviness is at an equilibrium with the tightness is around B standard; below C there isn't much functional difference in weight and the attack gets either gets sorta spongy or they remove all the low mids to tighten it up and it sounds horrid on the higher strings

It’s pretty lame but at least it’s better than the new Evildead! Can’t anyone do an E-stardad thrasher?

I think C/B tunings can work, but it has to fit the music. Sludge metal and doom metal benefit from those tunings bc those are genres that are allowed to be slow and loose. Thrash metal by definition is fast, tight, and sometimes technical. Writing tight music in loose tunings just makes no sense to me.
