This got buried in the wake of Ohms but I am still using it as sort of the cool rush after Deftones brings the fire. A perfect balance.

Still digesting this, Sunblind and Jara are highlights of the first part of the album for me

Gotta admit my initial impression of this album didn't strike the same sense of awe and mystery that their previous two LPs did. This feels wholly too shiny and immediate to be a Fleet Foxes album in my heart, even though I know their magic is still here. The patchwork mystique and fog of antiquity that ran the course of their previous work just isn't the same here imo, and I dont jive with that. Sure this is really great by general folk music standards, but its still a letdown on the first couple prarie highway go-arounds, at least to me and my girlfriend's ears.

That's pretty well said Evok. It doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does you, but you've captured the essence of what they lost in transitioning to this sleeker approach. I'm hoping this sticks with me long term, but for right now, I'm just soaking up its immediate beauty. No doubt that HB and CU will have more longevity though.

I kind of understand the detractors but this just keeps growing on me. Lovely album. In an odd way this is almost more challenging/less obvious than Crack-Up. That album was complicated on the surface, so it was obvious that it required closer, repeated listens to make sense of it. This album is super smooth on the surface, especially in the first half, and I think that because of that it’s not inviting many people to closer analysis. It works both as background and for close listening.

Same. I can't fault anyone for criticizing the direction, but I think as a one-off album that it's breathtaking. I don't want them to continue in this direction forever though.

Still liking lots of individual songs but like most folksy stuff I find it hard to sit through the whole album. wish this was a bit shorter tbh

I'll definitely be sitting down with this again. Ive heard it through the Kootenay mountains on a road trip out here, but my car's Bose system doesnt hold a candle to the PSB towers in my listening room, and that's where I'll hopefully really get to know the ins and outs of these compositions. I could tell enough in my car that the soundstaging and depth of field were still great, but now its time to actually experience them.

I think it'll grow on me. Initial listen didn't really wow me but it did make me appreciate the maturity to their sound, i'm sure i'll like it even more on repeat listens.

This is ridiculously consistent, not as many highs as HB or Crack-Up but its so enjoyable, every song is great aside from 1 or 2 just decent ones.

They definitely do a summer album way better than The National
