Hot Fuss wrecks Sam's Town any day (though I haven't heard either in too long) but both are great

Hot Fuss is a teenage classic for me, so many anthems on that one.

Sam's Town and Day & Age are fun too, after that the band fell off a cliff.

This is growing on me quickly. Had to bump up .5

The opener and Fire In Bone are my definitive favorites here. Blowback and the last two tracks are the only ones I dont like a lot

Also definitely the best album of theirs that I've heard. (Only heard their first two and this)

Oh you'll be hard pressed to find support that this beats their first two but I do agree it's excellent. Blowback is actually one of my favorites along with Fire in Bone and Caution. Part of what makes this so good though is that every song is at least a 3/5. You're not missing anything with their last 2-3 LPs. Just mediocre singles padded by forgettable filler tracks.

Every song here being at least a 3/5, I agree with, and is why I prefer this album. Hot Fuss had 3 or 4 tracks i really liked and the rest was a fat meh. Sam's Town had nothing that stuck out to me back when I spun it outside When You Were Young tbh but its been years and years since I checked it in full

I'll have to give them both a fair shake again soon to be sure, as now is the most interested in this band I've ever been lol

Hot Fuss is definitely a modern "mainstream" pop classic, for what it's worth, at least from a commercial and pop culture influence standpoint I'm not sure it's even debatable. Now in terms of whether or not you like it, you can call it absolute dross or whatever and that's perfectly acceptable!

zak I know that record is up to its arse in influences from Brits who did it better, but don't you dare tell me you haven't lost your shit to Mr. Brightside at some point and never looked back

To be fair ‘I’ve got soul but I’m not a solider’ from wotsit is a true rabble rousing classic. Many a great night had singing along to that one. Album was alright but it’s definitely a marker of where everything was and continued to get shit within the world of music.
The man had youth culture on the ropes and it’s never bounced back.

Jotw also makes a good point that Hot Fuss was a mish mash of British influences and as such any influence it had on culture as I know it was borrowed

I was in high school when it came out and it was huge so I guess in that sense it feels more important to me than it probably was

Looks like the ethereal woman spirit cloud on the front cover is taking a massive piss. I dig.

Wow i clearly missed out on a lot of their stylistic shifts then, is this the general sound they had the last couple records?

I guess its moreso the consistent execution thats changed from what I've heard

Edit: okay I thumbed through the tracks on Wonderful Wonderful and I see what you mean now but wow those tracks are boring as shit lol

This album is way better than any 2000s pop rock band 2020 album has the right to be. Feels a lot more restrained

This is still a noticeable stylistic shift from Wonderful Wonderful. Much more spacey/airy/cosmic with a touch of midwestern americana. WW didn't have all the atmospheric bliss and production tricks present in spades here.

All this lacks is the big time hooks. There's a few nifty hooks here and there, but nothing like we heard on their first two albums. Toss some melodies that infectious into this sort of atmosphere and you have a 4.5 or a 5.
