The hand-written lyrics thing is cool and all, but once you have folks asking for lyrics wouldn't you want to make them digitally available?

Just seems important to them for whatever reason. I don't know the rationale behind it or if they'll change as they become more popular, though.

I need to listen to this without a stream cutting in and out but impressed with the different direction.

Grace is just breaking me, Jesus

But I used to love the morning"

That's absolutely one of my favorite lines. It's such a vivid description of how it feels to lose someone. Anytime someone close to me has died (fortunately only a few times), a huge chunk of me goes missing. That's exactly what Rachel expresses there. It's not a cloud of white hot rage at god or the universe, just "things that used to have color...don't anymore".

Only one listen in but I immediately like this a fair amount more than the previous album.

Can tell this is not as accessible as the debut even tho it's more "polished", gonna take some listens to really sink in
That said I think the opening trio of songs is flat out astonishing

Then it started over and I really appreciated the intro about sleeping in one's shoes

The album kinda exudes something about the permanence of the human condition that speaks to me. I really dig when they get out there like Mercy...then come back with August song? That is straight forward and and old times traditional in instrumentation. Its was grounding and illuminates how far they travel with their sound

My favorite song is probably Grace. I know it's a guest vocalist but something about the way it sheds light on the death from The April Song but from the perspective of the daughter sends chills up my spine. Doesn't hurt that Rachel Bellone has a great voice either.

My mother passed away from cancer actually so yeah that song really hits like a truck, I think it's the best song here but January is still my personal favorite, the gang vox bridge reminds me so much of Flagpole Sitta, the lyrics are so wonderful and it also reminds me of old school Okkervil River

It's an excellent song with fantastic lyrics (not that the entire album isnt incredible lyrically) but it is certainly not my favorite

Sorry to hear about your mom. Grace is one of those songs...like Sufjan's Fourth of July...would just shatter me under those circumstances.
The January Song is a great way to start the album. The Okkervil River comparison is on point.

... And with cancer it's never ancient history my grandfather past 20 years ago but every time someone I know or am affiliated with gets it it brings everything right back for me

@WatchItExplode - I think the debut is easier to get into. I'd rather listen to it when I'm happy or driving around on a nice summer day. This album is more of a rainy autumn afternoon album; it's subtler but deeper. The production is also better. It's tough to choose.
