Pretty much agree with this but it's great to hear Jesse on these tracks, the emotion in his delivery is still there and that was always his greatest strength over Karl

The opening track got me pumped then the album just kind of lost its steam and all started blending together.

This is way better than Absent Light for me. AL is a solid metalcore album, but if you want to talk about Misery Signals just going through the motions, that album was it.

Absent Light sounds nothing like other MS releases so idk how it feels like them going through the motions on that one.

AL doesn't sound refined or calculated to me. It just sounds like MS running through whatever ideas they had for 45 min. It's MS so some of those ideas are going to be sick, but the pieces aren't put together in a thoughtful enough way to make the album nearly as effective as their other stuff. A lot of the songs I find to be drawn out and boring. The only songs I think are really strong are Carrier and The Shallows.

Compare that to here where the songs everything feels really tight and focused, yes the album is a bit short but no ideas overstay their welcome and to me the songs just have more thoughtful structure. I don't really have a problem with short albums.

I agree that this is better than Absent Light. I was never impressed with that album tbh, and relistening recently was a disappointing experience. There are a lot of weird melodic choices on that album, and the strings just sound bad. This has several songs better than anything on Absent Light, except The Shallows maybe.

"but generally I stay away from metalcore"

The exception being when one of these bands has sexual assault allegations against them and you feel the need to step up to bat for team rape apologist
