^ I see what you did there.

This is good stuff but I don't find the songwriting all that gripping - same issue I had with The Waterfall, but this is a good companion piece.

This thing has grown on me like a virus (eek) - definitely the summer album I didn't know I needed either @SowingSeason. I'm driving up north to Wisconsin from Chicago this weekend to drink on a lake for the weekend. It's gonna be strictly MMJ vibes - can't wait

I'd say that's up to you, definitely don't think it's required but could also be interesting for comparisons' sake

These songs are the remnants from 2015 Waterfall sessions which was going to be a triple album, so these songs are 5 years old. Will definitely give it a spin though - have a soft spot for this band. Each of their albums have some great moments. Z was my first it’s my favourite. Kind of lost interest a bit after Evil Urges. Need to have a good MMJ session and do their discography again. Neglected them for a long time now. Cheers for the review!

Two immediate stand outs: Loving the Prince-funk of Magic Bullet (Evil Urges style) and the drawn out psychedelic rock of Wasted (It Still Moves style). Rest might need more time, A bit middle of the road.

@TheWatchman71, good point about this being remnants from the same recording session as the original Waterfall. It's interesting that I prefer this to the original, I do think the overall quality is higher and this one retains its cohesiveness despite the sonic diversity of a lot of these songs.

@sunnyvale. Give me a few days with it before I rate it. I’m on my 2nd listen now and it’s settling in just fine!

Well, this is good no doubt and in places it’s Waterfall 1’s equal, but is it better, not sure. Difficult to judge as I have been spinning the first for years. Knowing the background to this release reveals that these are just twins separated at birth. Maybe impossible to choose a favourite. I’m glad they didn’t do a triple album though, as good as this music is and it’s their best in years, it just doesn’t have the intrigue, sonic variety, and experimental quirky edge to carry this era of their sound across a triple album format. If they were ever going to do such a big leap, should have been Circa 2003-2005, a mixture of It Still Moves and Z would have been a something.

Good review!

Can't see this topping the first Waterfall for me. Not enough songs like Spring (Among the Living), Compound Fracture, In Its Infancy (The Waterfall), Like a River, or Tropics, which are five of the best My Morning Jacket songs imo.

This has a little more of the basic adult contemporary radio rock sound of Circuital and the middle songs in Evil Urges, but at least blends that with the more summery, psychedelic style of The Waterfall.

The first two songs, Magic Bullet, Wasted, and the last two or three are quite nice.

Thanks @talons!

Sounds like we have different tendencies as far as what sides of MMJ we prefer, none of the songs you mentioned from The Waterfall would be anywhere near my favorite MMJ songs. To each their own!

Sunnyvale I love psych/prog rock so that's probably why. Would they be your favorites of their newer era? I find The Waterfall more interesting and depthful than the previous couple records.

I am much of more into their early albums, for the most part. However, as far as the newer era goes, my favorite song would probably be Only Memories Remain. I also really like Get The Point and the title track from Circuital. Those, along with a number from the new album would be my more recent favorites from MMJ.

I think Waterfall 1 is more consistent overall, has a bigger more lively sound which gives it some energy that Waterfall 2 lacks. By comparison W2 is more subdued but I think some it digs a bit deeper which I like. I enjoy Feel You and Wasted more than most of W1. But W2 has a real disappointing ending at least for me. The last track is the weakest and Welcome Home is average at best, feels worse yet after the great run of the previous 3 tracks.

Circuital title track may be my favorite MMJ song.
